Japanese Drift Master Release Delayed To May

Japanese Drift Master Release Date May.jpg
Japanese Drift Master was due to be out in just about two weeks - but fans need more patience: The game's release has been delayed by two months.

On March 26, 2025, the wait was supposed to be over for those who are eagerly anticipating Japanese Drift Master: The title by developer Gaming Factory is promising a mix between simulation and arcade gameplay with highly customizable cars in a fictional Japanese open-world setting. Recently, Honda had been confirmed to be joining the list of licensed manufacturers, which already had Subaru, Nissan and Mazda on it.

However, a new video statement by Gaming Factory revealed that the release date has been moved back: Instead of late March, May 21, 2025, is planned for the game to be out on Steam.

"After careful consideration, we have decided to move the launch date from March to May. We want to keep our promise to release a game that meets our high standards so that when you finally get your hands on the game, it's nothing short of exceptional", explains the video statement. "The extra time will allow us to fine-tune the final details and provide the best possible experience for everyone."

Japanese Drift Master Release Date Delay: The right call?

While many who were looking forward to March 26 already will now probably groan in frustration, including our own @Rene / GRunner, it might be a good call to delay the release. A good first impression is important, after all, so taking extra time to polish Japanese Drift Master could prove the right decision.

Of course, this also means that players' expectations might be higher as well.

Japanese Drift Master has been delayed before, too. Originally, the game was supposed to launch in 2024, but was delayed to the March date instead for the same reason as the second delay. Substantial changes in development and the game's visual quality also meant that the JDM: Rise of the Scorpion demo was delisted on February 3, as it no longer reflected what to expect in the full game.

Experience tells me that this is never a good sign. Hopefully this delay isn't about 'absolute mess -> somewhat playable' but 'good -> excellent'. However, this project went through engine changes and whatnot, I would certainly not get it without checking detailed reviews first, regarding general gameplay as well as the technical state. One thing is certain, this kind of game cannot afford a bad launch due to technical difficulties, hopefully the devs take it seriously.

Delays are only a concern for the developpers or publishers whose cash will enter later, never for the customer who only can expect a solid product.

And the JDM team may have learned a lesson from the terrible launch of TDU Solar Crown which itself should copy the example of No Man' Sky if it wants to rise from its ashes...
