Assetto Corsa EVO: State Of Early Access & Known Issues

Assetto Corsa EVO Early Access First Impressions Lotus Emira.jpg

The Early Access launch of Assetto Corsa EVO had the sim racing community buzzing with excitement. However, it was not perfect, as had to be expected - here are known issues and what the Early Access experience is like.

When the clock hit 15:00 UTC on January 16, the sim racing community finally seemed united - or most of it, anyway. Seemingly everyone who loves racing games and sims was waiting for Assetto Corsa EVO to unlock for its first Early Access release - which it did about an hour later than planned.

Plenty of sim racers were happy to jump in right away - in fact, the concurrent player peak on Steam happened just an hour after the game unlocked and clocked 25,752 players - and enjoyed what they were offered, but many others also reported various issues.

What is the Assetto Corsa EVO Early Acces like?

As announced, the first Early Access release of Assetto Corsa EVO is relatively limited when it comes to content and game modes, although compared to Kunos Simulazioni's previous EA efforts for both AC and ACC which both came with one track and one car only initially, 20 cars and five tracks are plenty.

Two of the five tracks, namely Brands Hatch and Suzuka, come with multiple layouts. The well-known Indy layout joins Brands Hatch GP, and Suzuka GP is complemented by the Suzuka East and West layouts, upping the number of available layouts to eight.

The first parts of the Driving Academy and car customization are not available yet as of January 17, 11:45 UTC due to the game's servers not being online, see below in the Known Issues section. That leaves a practice and single race mode, the latter allowing players to compete against the AI. The eagerly-awaited Assetto Corsa EVO open world will not be part of the game until Summer.

Meanwhile in the garage, the cars that are available come in different versions, meaning you will find different representations of the same model. For instance, the Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 can be driven in its stock form, but is also present with a carbon hood or the ZL1E Extreme Track Performance Package - so there is some variation to be had.

On track, the driving physics are the core of the game, of course, and for those who have spent considerable time with it, it is the subject of praise in most cases. In my short time behind the wheel in AC EVO, I found the driving to be very engaging, dynamic and detailed - there will be a more in-depth first impressions article on our website soon, so keep an eye on this space!

Assetto Corsa EVO Early Access: Known Issues

Game Will Not Launch

Perhaps the most frustrating issue many were getting is the fact that Assetto Corsa EVO simply would not launch after installing. In fact, this happened to me as well - you click 'Play' on Steam, the sim is briefly shown as 'Running', then stops without an error message or any indication of what is wrong.

There seem to be multiple possible reasons for this: Some players reported that allowing Assetto Corsa EVO to access their 'Documents' folder fixed the issue, others mentioned that simply switching off their Windows Defender firewall for the time being (don't forget to re-enable it after playing!) got their game running.

For a third group including myself, the devil lay in the detail of the Microsoft C++ Redistributable package. Uninstalling and reinstalling the latest version eventually saw me in the game as well - make sure to install the right version for your system, however, as installing the 32-bit variant (x86) will not fix the issue on 64-bit processor, and vice versa.

Framerate Issues

As AC EVO is still far from finished, it is also not perfectly optimized when it comes to performance. Some users have reported that even in the menus, they experienced extremely low framerates to the point of the menus becoming barely usable. Similarly, their frames per second were really low when out on track.

There does not seem to be a universal solution to this, as it looks like the issue is very dependent on the individual PC setup a user is running. The rear-view mirror resolution is reportedly a good option to turn down for an FPS gain, also using DLSS in Performance Mode can result in a smoother experience.

Triple Screen Setup Issues

Many were delighted to hear that both VR and triple screen support would be on board from the start in AC EVO, but triples did not work for everyone inititally. Some users reported facing a black screen when trying to drive in a session, others reported a skewed image on the center screen and none at all on the side screens. For some, a clean reinstall of the GPU drivers fixed this issue.

Online Servers Not Running

Multiplayer is not part of the first release of Assetto Corsa EVO, but despite this, the game's online servers not running caused some issues on Early Access launch day. First and foremost, it initially restricted car choice to the base cars in the game, with everything else not being accessible. Mere hours after the game unlocked, a patch was released to fix this issue, making all 20 cars available in offline mode.

Most likely, this is a result of the in-game economy being tied to an online service. Remember, AC EVO will require certain licenses to allow players to drive certain cars, and the in-game currency for customizations is likely also part of the online equation. As a result, neither car customization nor the Driving Academy worked out of the box, and they still do not at the time of writing this article.

The community was not too happy to find out that even when they are looking to dive into purely singleplayer modes, it seems like AC EVO will require an online connection.

Random Crashes

A number of players also experienced random crashes - not of their cars, but the game itself. This happened in different intervals: For some, it was three minutes, others had the issue when quitting a session. It seems that for some players, the game is not very stable as of the first Early Access release.

Assignments Not Saving

A somewhat annoying issue, some players reported that their button and steering assignments were reset when relaunching the game, meaning they had to re-bind all of them. As a result, checking if they are still there and hitting 'Apply' after assigning buttons for a device and before switching to another is advisable.

Additionally, the axis for all pedals is seemingly inverted by default, so make sure to click 'invert' for all three pedals and your handbrake, should you use one.

Suggested Troubleshooting Methods

Game Not Launching

  • Close Steam, go to your documents folder and delete the ACE folder, then launch Steam and then launch Assetto Corsa EVO. You may need to disable OneDrive if you have it enabled whilst you carry out the test.
  • Repair Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable x64 & x86 versions via the official installer, and then reboot.
  • Check that the AssettoCorsaEVO application in the Steam Apps directory is whitelisted on your firewalls and antivirus applications.
  • Open Controlled Folder Access through file manager or through a windows search. It should be under the Virus & threat protection section of Windows Defender. Click on the section that says “Allow an app through Controlled Folder Access” you then have to press “Add an allowed app” after pressing this choose the “Recently blocked apps” option and find ACE (Asseto Corsa EVO) it should be under that name or something similar.

VR Performance

Launch the game, change the quality preset to Very Low, hit apply and then close the game, restart the game, then increase the graphics quality again.

Of course, with Assetto Corsa EVO not being a full release yet, issues have to be expected in Early Access. The fact that Kunos released a patch to make all cars available offline within just a few hours of the initial launch is encouraging, so the continuous work the studio puts into its new title should hopefully iron out many of these initial issues quite quickly.

Think back to just about a year ago when Motorsport Games also chose th Early Access route for Le Mans Ultimate. The official WEC game also launched with a number of issues, but a very promising core, which seems to be the case for AC EVO as well. MSG and Studio 397 were quick to deploy a number of patches and hotfixes very soon after the initial launch. Early Access means getting access to a title that is being actively developed, after all.

I haven't been able to invert pedals even after multiple attempts, but today I'll give it a try again.
I'm in no hurry and I will definitely await the first patches to fix the major issues. :)

It's not super straight-forward, but you have to click on the pedal in question, then select the property tab, and invert them there - just in case you have not tried that yet :)

25k users peak, it already dwarves all other sims in just one day. Without any online mode. I guess a game running without tweaking hours in config files and crashing every 5 minutes can get a proper user base even day 1 of early access huh ?

I think some of the irritation being reported comes from the fact that "Early Access" is now too broad of a term for what are several different types of Early Access launches, and people are getting a bit blindsided when they expect one and get the other.
  • LMU for example was basically finished, just needed bug testing.
  • DiRT Rally just needed more cars and tracks.
  • ACEvo is a tech demo.

I did, but there was this strange behavior where the menu would show some not connected Thrustmasters peripherals (that I don't even own) as soon as I clicked on Property.
It was 2 AM though and I gave it only a ten minutes try, so hopefully today I'll get it sorted. :D

This online and license crap will really piss off a lot of players, me included. I pay for the game, let me use all of it's content, online or offline. This is the exact thing that pushes people to use pirated copies. Why don't you learn from Ubisoft/EA f*ups?

Optimization is so bad, even the menu FPS is low for some reason. This is the most urgent issue. I haven't seen a more unoptimized game.

FFB still not as good as AC, though a little better than ACC.

Doesn't detect controllers properly.

Unintuitive UI. Typical modern developer syndrome, they just can't build proper UI.

Don't know if just me, but the car I picked kept resetting back to Abarth.

After AC and ACC, this is their THIRD big release. And it's just offline game with 20 cars and 5 tracks. It's inexcusable.

And ACE being in the state as it is now is not surprising, all Kunos sims were rough especially at the beginning of EA. LMU was supposed to be a full release - wonder why it's still in EA, it's pretty polished now I feel. And there are projects like BeamNG where it seems they will be EA forever... And there are sims that are out of EA, but still in development, where I bought a bunch of content thanks to "claimed" AI improvements, and I can't even race because it got completely broken... Uhhh...

You forgot to mention:
- VR isn't usable due to performance even on the highest specs and lowest settings
- Races with AI tank performance by factor of 2 to 3
- AI has difficulties getting around turn 1 and generally behaves exactly like in AC1 but more janky, making it extremely frustrating to even try any racing right now
- Always online aspect points in the direction of mod support a-la Bethesda - an online content shop, and otherwise restrictions on moddability

I'm kind of torn between shaking my head and hoping they'll figure it out. I'd like a good new highly moddable sim racing platform, but this looks like it will take years of further development and backtracking on the always online aspects for community to come in to mod.

I prepared myself last week by driving cars on a track in Assetto Corsa and rFactor 2 in which I can also drive in AC EVO, to be able to compare it properly.
I will ignore the issues that come with Early Access, except for getting the triples working. After a lot of effort they now work, but with nVidia Surround. That is not what I want. With nVidia Surround every game works on three screens, that is not what I expect from triples support. And nVidia Surround gives annoying problems for many other programs. That is why I do not want to use it anymore.

Then the most important thing, the driving. To be short, that was a disappointment. In a simulator you do not feel the g-forces that you do feel when you drive a car in real life. Assetto Corsa compensates for that in the ffb. Strictly speaking that is not realistic, because in Assetto Corsa you feel something on your steering wheel that you do not feel on your steering wheel in real life, but with your body. Still, I strongly prefer to feel it in the ffb. Then you feel where the car is going and where the limit is. Unfortunately, you hardly feel that in rFactor 2. In rFactor 2, compared to Assetto Corsa, you feel the details of the asphalt and the kerbs in the ffb better.
I had hoped to feel the basic ffb (feeling what the car is doing and where the limit is) of Assetto Corsa in AC EVO as well, together with more details of the asphalt and the kerbs. But alas. The basics of Assetto Corsa are gone in AC EVO. The details are a bit better, but the lack of the basics is a very big loss.
That makes the ffb in AC EVO feel "very interesting" to me, but not really usable for serious sim racing. A few years ago, I would never have thought that I would find the ffb of Assetto Corsa better than that of rFactor 2, but now I really do. The details are suddenly less important when the base is missing. And that is now also the case in AC EVO.

Many will find the graphics great. It looks slick. But to be honest, I don't like that. Too much bling bling. For me it could look a bit calmer. I prefer my PC capacity to be fully used for good driving instead of moving spectators.....

The sound in AC EVO is a lot better than in Assetto Corsa. But also a bit exaggerated. The cars that you can now drive in AC EVO are all closed cars. Then you don't hear that much difference in reflections of the sound by the environment. Moreover, if you wear a crash helmet, you hear it even less. It all sounds very interesting in AC EVO (if you like it) but it is not realistic.

Then the nonsense with the selection of cars. Kunos has now quickly done an update with an offline option to be able to drive in all cars. When the servers are available again, Kunos can do two things. Drop the offline option or keep it. Dropping it would be very sad.
For me, a number of things make me consider a racing game as a simulator or a game to just have some fun with.
The basis is that it drives well. That is now very questionable in AC EVO, actually below par.
Then I want to be able to put cars and circuits in it myself and adjust them if necessary. That is not yet possible with AC EVO, possibly in the future. But we still have to wait and see how easy or difficult Konus will make it for us.
Then I just want to be able to choose any car and circuit to drive at all times. If I have to do all kinds of things first, do tests, earn virtual money and so on, a form of career mode, then it has really become a game for me and absolutely no longer a racing simulator. I can understand that there are people who want this. Then give the option to enable and disable this.

I wanted to go to Sim Formula Europe 2025 in Maastricht today. But unfortunately that won't work out today. I would still like to drive a bit with AC EVO, but given how unhappy I am with it, that won't happen.

So Kunos. I'll wait and see in which direction the development of Early Access will go and then see. For now I'm not very enthusiastic about it.

It really seems Kunos has put ACE in EA now in whatever rough state it is because they need money to fund its development, as if they were running out of money.
Wow, that is constructive. An Assetto Corsa title in Early Access being rough in the first build... Hmmm, that has never ever happened before, right?!

If we look at it positively and hope for the best....it could be that Kunos themself have some reservations about the career mode and the fiddling with the car selection, and are just trying to see how it will be responded to in Early Access. This is something Kunos can easily make a choice in. No rocket science required.

I've got this issue, and the workaround for me is making any change to your triple screen settings (i.e. decreasing eye-screen distance by 1mm). After applying, the scene gets rendered correctly.
A little annoying to do it every time, but not the end of the world.

Actually with all the releases in the last time, also like MSFS2024, maybe it would be better to not promote it that much like it was done. Many people are hyped and get more hyped from the youtuber and twitcher caste, which also suck their milk from this body.

And then you have thousands of excited peoples which want to see the big revolution. Maybe a softer start of such projects would help with the first experience and the opinion about a first rollout of something.

Well, sorry to say it, but this really looks like it 's gonna be a christmas preasent... if I can play (all cars and all tracks and freeroam) OFF-LINE whenever I choose, simply because I'm not one to fiddle with computer settings constantly, (games should be download and play) I get confused getting a round of drinks for more than two people!
The reason I don't play Elite Dangerous anymore (after 2000hours) is because for some reason an update removed all my control settings* that had evolved over time, and I just cannot find the motovation to drag through it all again, as I don't want a similar situation with ACE I'll wait untill you younger guys have helped iron out the bugs and buy it then.

*For the forum user that demands reasons for people's choices... I don't use conventional AWSD set up, I use the directional keys and the surrounding keys... and no it's not a simple shift to the right! and No I'm not telling you why!

I would say you are right if there was any official pre-release promotion with early keys from Kunos to YouTubers, but there was nothing. Apart from that they do what they do for the ad/view/sponsor money and that's understandable.

Having tried MSFS24 on Game Pass recently, I found it to be a much more broken experience, and it's not even Early Access. That was very disappointing
