Le Mans Ultimate Player Numbers Soar Following February Update

The Le Mans Ultimate February Update looks like a success for developer Studio 397 and publisher Motorsport Games: Following its release, LMU player numbers increased massively.

With its latest update, Le Mans Ultimate continues to expand. The official WEC game released three more 2024 LMGT3 cars, a refined tire model for their class, and a number of quality of life adjustments days before the World Endurance Championship 2025 season opener in Qatar.

And despite the Lusail Circuit not joining the sim's track lineup until May, players flocked to LMU like they have not done in a long time. On the February Update's release day, the sim recorded a peak of 4,015 concurrent players on Steam - the only other time they had previously been this high was right after its release in February of 2024. This still marks the all-time peak of 4,691 concurrent players.

Our own @Michel Wolk found the refined LMGT3 tire model to be quite detailed and pleasant, and either a lot of sim racers thought the same or were keen to find out for themselves. In any case, Stephen Hood, CEO of publisher Motorsport Games, was happy to see the increase in attention following the release of the latest content and update.

Now, only the Lamborghini Huracán LMGT3 Evo 2 and the Lexus RC F LMGT3, in addition to Qatar, are missing to complete the full list of 2024 season content. As mentioned above, they are supposed to arrive in May.

Le Mans Ultimate: Key Feature Yet To Come

However, it is another feature that should be part of the accompanying update that could propel LMU to new heights before summer starts: driver swaps, a must-have for the official WEC game.

To most sim racers, it should not come as a surprise that team-based online endurance events are rather popular, as can be observed in iRacing's Special Events each year, for instance. Currently, Le Mans Ultimate cannot host these, but once the sim is capable of this, the return of Le Mans Virtual is also imminent. But this time, it will be open to all players rather than an invite-only event like it was when it was last held in rFactor 2.

And an official 24 Hours of Le Mans event in the most accurate WEC grid available from a sim racing developer that you can tackle with your friends and teammates sounds like an excellent time, if you ask us.

As I said a million times even before LMU was released: if well done, LMU could replace ACC in the GT3 market, the rF2 driving experience is simply superior and so is the netcode (car contact) and AI. Just get ELMS and AsLMS to join as well. Even without IMSA license you could release US tracks. This will bring the rest of the players.
The way they release content is still stupid tho. 2024 pack should have been released before Le Mans last year. The focus should be on ELMS and AsLMS by now.

Creating content takes time and resources. Time can be reduced by committing even more resources. I am afraid their financial situation didn't allow and won't allow in the close future to make huge investments into bringing a lot of content quickly. I can see ELMS happening as it shares a lot of content with WEC (for 2025 it would be 3 new tracks and a couple LMP3 models) but anything else would be a stretch at this point. Not to mention full release should come first.

Yeah I think it also takes money and effort to license stuff (especially tracks) and I suspect this has become much harder/costlier due to greeeeed from the people selling the licenses.

I would really like to see Overtake.geegee investigate this issue in simracing.

Who says that this website only spreads doom and gloom regarding LMU? Have at it: today it is highlighting a spike of players, and just days before the monthly article about Steam numbers.

Well done S397. I'm still waiting for it to get out of EA to buy it, but by now it's just a question of when, not if.

Typical sim racer's schizophrenic reaction. "Hey new content, greatest game ever, excellent UI, great tire model".

Two months later. " What a POS, UI keeps crashing me , tire model sucks, I can't get VR to work properly, we need more tracks, I never drove the GT3 Mustang in my life, but this thing doesn't feel right, when do we get to mod".

Numbers nose dive.

Same ol, same ol.

Don't forget what we, the consumers, demand. Detail in graphics, objects, laser scanned surface, etc. I am not a graphical artist, so anyone with the qualifications feel free to correct me, but in my perception of trends in the industry, the tools haven't caught up with the increased fidelity that has become the norm today. The pace of content releases have slowed down significantly. From "small" PC sim studios, through modding, to "industry giants" like Gran Turismo, everywhere.

Great to see a new product doing so well! I havent yet got into LMU due to the VR performance early on, but reading thats now on the improvement and will be rebuying it soon. Looks like its really coming on nicely.

And once again I am reminded that I am not 'most sim racers' - "team based", "endurance" and "online" are all words that actually put me off tbh, but I'm pleased for LMU and their players.
I'm probably just jealous of those young folk who actually have the stamina (and friends) for that kind of gaming. :0
If I start getting knackered any quicker I'll be down to drag racing lol.
Pro tip kids - don't get old.

This, this peak of payers are just folks riding the fomo train

Good fun for the ~hour I could spare for it last night. 992 and Mustang both felt lean and mean on the updated tire model. Never had a consistent issue with losing the LMGT3s, so did not immediately feel a big difference in tire modeling with some AI practice sessions. Look forward to hopefully carving out a couple hours for it tonight to really push it to the limit and see if I can feel the updates.

Now I just have my fingers crossed for a way to address the VR exposure/brightness. Still a bit dim/muted in my HMD and nighttime cripplingly too dark. Started with the image adjustments they made to VR a few updates ago.

Steam numbers, end of the yr numbers will show proof which sim is doing well and which is not for 2025. Would like to know which sim was best for 2024 and which was the worst.

3200 players today, -800 players today, the hype is gone already, the numbers will decrease more until the usual numbers before the update....

Yeah true. I would just like to know: how much of it is that and how much of it is just track licensing. I have no idea....

We used to get track pack with 4 track, now its 1 track at a time and starting from a small number at game release.

Not to knock LMU though, the game is v good. Though driving the LMU Porsche and the AC Evo Porsche GT3 cup back-to-back on Fuij I did prefer the AC Evo one, the LMU one feels very DriftFactor 2.

I think the games industry should get a Studio Union together, and tell the various tracks to get real or what to do with their licencing fees, same with Manufacturers, if they can't make it work without ripping off the gaming industry (and gamers) then their business plan sucks, if they can but just want more... because, then they're taking us all for fools.... and we are!
