Once again, the OverTake Racing Club is throwing it back to the 1984 Formula One season - or is it? Join the rFactor 2 event at Istanbul Park on March 10!
Formula 1 has raced in 34 countries in total since the World Championship started in 1950. Some events, like the Swiss Grand Prix that was held from 1950 to 1954 or the Moroccan Grand Prix, which was only held once in 1958, have been forgotten by many. And how about the 1984 Turkish Grand Prix?
If that does not ring a bell at all despite you being a walking F1 encyclopedia, there is no need to worry - that race did not actually happen. It is the scenario of an upcoming rFactor 2 event in our Racing Club for Premium Members, however: On Monday, March 10, the 1984 class of cars lines up on the grid at Istanbul Park, for a bit of a 'what if?' race.
Of course, the real Turkish Grand Prix did not appear on the F1 calendar until 2005, and F1 ran at Istanbul Park until 2011. As is often the case, disagreements over money meant that the event was dropped from the calendar after that, but it reappeared in the 2020 and 2021 seasons to fill up the calendar during the COVID-19 pandemic.
One of Turn 8's four apexes at Istanbul Park - your right-side tires will go through a lot in the race.
Famous for its quad-apex Turn 8, the track was a fan favorite. Tackling the long, sweeping turns of the circuit should be even more of a challenge in the turbocharged 1984 F1 beasts, though luckily, there is a fair amount of run-off to save you should things go wrong, as Istanbul is a fairly modern track despite turning 20 years old this year.
Once again, the event will be streamed live courtesy of @Roy Magnes and @Joakim Skalstad. Keep your eyes on the event in the Race Event Selector, as the link to the stream will be posted there!
To enter the event, all you need to do is click the 'Sign-up' button above as a Premim Member - that's it, you're in! Afterwards, simply install the needed content, show up for the race, and have fun in our Racing Club.

The cars
This 1984 mod is a League edition, meaning all of them have the same performance files. As such, feel free to race in any car you like as it will drive exactly the same as any other, and setups can easily be shared between them. Still, please choose a car you wish to drive so we can get a nice and colourful grid!

Warmup replaced by Reconnaissance Laps
After qualifying, the session goes straight to the Race. This is the start of the Reconnaissance laps. The timer will start and you have 5 minutes to exit the Pitlane and drive around the track. If you wish to do multiple laps, please drive through the Pitlane and continue through. At the end of the 5 minutes, the Pitlane will close and you have 2m 30s to continue your laps and line up on the grid. At any point in this session, from your first lap out the pits to your (up to) third, you may park on the grid. This is then you set for the race, so do not escape back to the Pits or you will be starting from the Pitlane.
When you park on the grid, your car will be set for the race with whatever fuel you have onboard and the same tyres and brakes, but they will crucially be up to temperature. If you wish to do practice starts, please park sensibly and do them at the Pitlane exit only.
