Racing Club Goes Classic IMSA: Join For Free This Friday!

The OverTake Racing Club throws it back to the late 1980s with a retro IMSA event. Join for free this Friday for a 39-lap contest at Road America in rFactor 2!

The OverTake Racing Club is always a good place to look for races with interesting scenarios. Fancy some retro racing? Chances are that the weekly Racing Club schedule has something on it for you. And if you are a fan of sportscar racing as well, this Friday's rFactor 2 event is one you do not want to miss.

All February, Racing Club events have been open for all OverTake members, not just Premium Members as usual, to celebrate the launch of our Race Event Selector. Friday, February 28, will be the final day on which this is active, and to mark the occasion, the rFactor 2 portion of our Club is headed to digital Wisconsin, to Road America. There, you can jump behind the wheel of an Audi 90 IMSA GTO - or, if you are looking for something even faster, a Group C/GTP car!

Originally a 500-kilometer event in the 1989 season, the Racing Club contest will run over 39 laps, which amounts to 254 km, so just over half the original distance. This should result somewhere between 80 and 90 minutes of racing.

To end the "free February" at OverTake with a major event, we will take inspiration from the Christmas specials, but not recreate any race in the World Sportscar Championship, but taking the flight over the ocean and visit Road America, for the 1989 Miller Lite 500*(250km)
For regulars of the rF2 club, it is worth noting the slight change of times for sessions this day, due to the slightly longer race distance we will be doing (should end around the same time as any normal raceday). Hopefully this doesn't cause major issues for any of our racers in the Americas or Oceania!
*The race was not called Miller Lite, but for alcohol-reasons we are renaming it, and we will do half distance not a 500km event.

Cars:
  • IMSA GTP/Gr.C: Group C Community Update [LINK]
  • IMSA GTO: Audi 90 GTO [STEAM] *460HP Engine Only*

The real event was won by Geoff Brabham and Chip Robinson in a Nissan GTP ZX-Turbo, beating out the Jaguar XJR-10 of Jan Lammers and Price Cobb as well as the XJR-9 of John Nielsen and Davy Jones. In the GTO class, Steve Millen was triumphant in his Nissan 300ZX Turbo - which he drove solo. Originally, John Morton was supposed to relieve him, but the then 47-year-old did not race the #7 that day for reasons that seem beyond research. If anyone knows the background, please share it in the comments!

To enter the event, all you need to do is click the 'Sign-up' button above - that's it, you're in! Afterwards, simply install the needed content, show up for the race, and have fun in our Racing Club. And if you like the experience and want more once February ends, you can become a Premium Member for just €1 a month, which will also net you more cool benefits like ad-free browsing, giveaways, and more.

Sorry @Yannik Haustein I cannot help you there.
I can give you a fun-fact though.

Up until the mid 80's, IMSA had quite a few bigger races, like the 6hrs at Riverside, there were races at Charlotte Roval, Pocono Roval(!). Fancy races like the double 3hr at the Glen (instead of one 6hr race, it was two 3hr races).
However, from 1987 this changed. Then it was only the Daytona 24hr, Sebring 12hr and... the Road America 500km (or Löwenbräu Classic and Miller High Life 500) that had all classes doing the same race.
IMSA back then, did like IMSA today, there were some race weekends where only GT cars were racing, and others were only GTP's were racing. However, unlike today. The majority of weekends where both GTP and GT were racing, they raced separate races with different distances(!), even some of the GT-only weekends had GTO and GTU run different distances!
From 1987 and up until Watkins Glen got a combined race, and Road America had the now named Piggly Wiggly Grand Prix (yes, that was the name!), Road America was the only place, except the Daytona 24hr and Sebring 12hr that actually ran as a proper multiclass event.

Which is why I chose this as the race!

Fun-fact #2. IMSA have uploaded quite a few highlights and race broadcasts from the Group C/GTP-era. But neither IMSA, nor any random youtube-channel have ever uploaded anything from the Road America 500km races. The only I could find was some small clips from a German AUDI 90 GTO documentary.

Thanks for organizing. Are there any key combos I definitely need to map for this? What is a good GTP car for someone with little talent?

Boost/engine mixture and MFD buttons. MFD to do changes to pit-stops if needed (it can be 0-stopped if you aim for that, might not be the best strategy... or it might be the best).
The engine mixture/boost buttons are really useful for fuel saving during formation lap and for strategic changes during the race.

Porsche or Mazda is the way for you. The Porsche has the widest range of boost options, and can easily be changed around to power levels and stratege that feels nice, 80's turbo though.
Mazda has the kindest power range and is the "simplest" car to drive. Harder to qualify well in, because of engine settings, but in a race like this qualifying isn't that important.
The Sauber is more brutal, and while it is fast, it probably needs to be properly pushed and used (abused?) to make the most of it. You might feel like you do a better race in the two other cars due to how the Sauber needs to be driven.

Thank you Ole, if I am not too tired tonight, I will join you in the Mazda or the Porsche. Does this mod come with original liveries? Does it have the Rothman's Porsche? That would be hard to resist, regardless of turbo lag measured in seconds.

There is an insane amount of liveries from IMSA, WSP, Le Mans from 86 to 91 in the mod :) They've even added some of the Toyota liveries to the Porsche. I think your main issue there will be to decide on a livery, not the lack of liveries! :p
