EA Sports WRC Development Ends, Licence Going Elsewhere?

Work on EA Sports WRC will be ending with no plans for a follow-up. Could that mean a new developer will be picking up the World Rally Championship licence?

When it comes to the World Rally Championship's officially licenced games, many developers have had their turn with it. Evolution Studios from 2001 to 2005, Milestone revived it after a five year hiatus and held onto it until Kylotonn did so until the release of WRC Generations in 2022. Following that, the licence landed with EA and Codemasters who developed the Colin McRae and DiRT titles.

In an unexpected move following the release of EA Sports WRC in 2023, the game did not see a follow-up for 2024. Instead with the addition of a season content update, this game was expected to be the only WRC game for a few years. However with the news today, it appears the WRC licence is on its way elsewhere.

Posted to EA's official site, the announcement states that the recently released Hard Chargers Content Pack was indeed the last update to EA Sports WRC. Whilst the game will remain available for purchase and online support will most likely continue, development for it and any future instalments will cease.

Simultaneously, WRC themselves have announced that the future of the gaming franchise will enter a bold new direction. With news on the matter promised soon, perhaps it is an indication that a new developer will get the licence for the World Rally Championship.

Who that will end up being, we will soon find out.

People can say what they want they still did a better job with it than the pile of rubbish that nacon churned out every year.

WRC saying they want to take it in an ambitious new direction I very much doubt will be full sim. They want the game with their name on to sell big so I bet they go arcade route.

Going back to Milestone... you heard it here first!! What could possibly go wrong!

On a less sarcastic note, when it is moved on, another studio will just milk it just like the others. Different name, same actions. I so wish someone would care about Rally.
Milestone are putting out some bloody good games lately. The new supercross 25 game is great once you get used to the controls and motogp 25 is the best motogp game they've ever made.

Well, sh!t. I enjoyed the game, I hope they won't abandon the online part of it for a couple of years. Also bummed there won't be any Celicas or Corolla WRC in the game now.
Worst part is how the EA statement is worded: "For now, we are pausing development plans on future rally titles" Sounds like the Dirt team is getting axed, or if they are lucky, transfered to the F1 team. Bloody EA.
Any guess who might get the licence now? All the major sim developers are quite busy at the moment. I hope that ambitious new direction doesn't mean a mobile game.

Codemasters saying they have no plans for another rally game... This is grim.

I'd be happy to see WRC license returning to KT Racing (they were really close to achieving something really great with WRC Generations), but I also don't want them to be distracted from efforts to save TDU: Solar Crown.

So who else could get the job done? Maybe... maybe Saber Interactive? A rally game with SnowRunner's terrain deformation is something I'd really like to see :D (why they didn't use it for Dakar games is beyond me)

KT leaving generation with a broken throttle, brake and handbrake inputs system and saying they're correct?
Or having the same controller assignement issues with multiple peripherals since WRC7 and never solving them?
I honestly love their stages and liked the physics more than codemasters' but KT is a huge disappointement for how it leaves its games unpatched as sopn as they're out.

As for the news itself, kind of expected from EA. I feel sorry for people that believed this was going to be the next big rally sim, but EA is known for what it is, and Dirt Rally didn't even fully simulate suspension geometry IIRC. I honestly found it fun, but never considered it a sim compared to RBR or even BeamNG.

Yesterday EA axes 500 dev from Respawn and cancel two games, now cancel the new WRC, the only reason for Codemaster still exist is because EA still have the F1 license, but when is gone, Codemaster is dead.
I think the next WRC will be more of Sim title, made by the part of Iracing team thats ir making the new Nascar and console titles, or maybe by Motorsport Game, LMU proves that beside the bad management the Dev can delivery.
