Work on EA Sports WRC will be ending with no plans for a follow-up. Could that mean a new developer will be picking up the World Rally Championship licence?
When it comes to the World Rally Championship's officially licenced games, many developers have had their turn with it. Evolution Studios from 2001 to 2005, Milestone revived it after a five year hiatus and held onto it until Kylotonn did so until the release of WRC Generations in 2022. Following that, the licence landed with EA and Codemasters who developed the Colin McRae and DiRT titles.
In an unexpected move following the release of EA Sports WRC in 2023, the game did not see a follow-up for 2024. Instead with the addition of a season content update, this game was expected to be the only WRC game for a few years. However with the news today, it appears the WRC licence is on its way elsewhere.
Posted to EA's official site, the announcement states that the recently released Hard Chargers Content Pack was indeed the last update to EA Sports WRC. Whilst the game will remain available for purchase and online support will most likely continue, development for it and any future instalments will cease.
Simultaneously, WRC themselves have announced that the future of the gaming franchise will enter a bold new direction. With news on the matter promised soon, perhaps it is an indication that a new developer will get the licence for the World Rally Championship.
Who that will end up being, we will soon find out.
