In the wake of the controversy surrounding Ubisoft taking the original The Crew game offline, the subsequent two entries in the series are now set to become playable without an internet connection - and we now know when one of them will be getting it.
More and more in recent times, games that previously required a constant internet connection to play have been rolling back on that requirement. Kunos Simulazioni for example will be introducing offline play for Assetto Corsa EVO's early access, and Gran Turismo Sport's end-of-life patch did not render the game unplayable once it was deployed.
Back in April 2024, Ubisoft delisted The Crew - originally released in 2014 - from all game stores and then from player's libraries. This sparked outrage from the playerbase, already expressing their discontent with how games are rendered unplayable once the developers discontinue the server connections. This resulted in a lawsuit against Ubisoft, with the French publisher claiming players do not own the games they purchase, merely licencing it.
As a result of the backlash that followed, Ubisoft Ivory Tower are now taking steps to add offline modes to both The Crew 2 and The Crew Motorfest. In a video released to Ubisoft's YouTube channel, game producer Grégory Corgié states that The Crew 2 will receive its offline mode before the end of 2025.
Players will potentially get a chance to be involved in the development, with a test for the offline mode scheduled for April 30th with select PC players getting an email to download the offline mode test build and provide feedback. The build will come with its own custom save and it will not impact the player's active save on their account.
Corgié mentions that as The Crew 2 was developed as an online only title from the start, meaning plenty of features within the game will need to be changed so it can still function in offline.
The Crew Motorfest will not get an offline mode at the same time as The Crew 2, with it coming later on at an undisclosed time. For the moment, Motorfest's live service will be prioritised but once The Crew 2's offline mode is deployed, no doubt Motorfest's offline mode will get priority. All platforms that The Crew 2 and The Crew Motorfest are available for will get this offline mode feature in due course.
Thankfully, players will still be able to drive, fly and trek the waters in both the collective United States in The Crew 2 and the Hawaiian peninsula in The Crew Motorfest for the many years after those game's servers eventually are discontinued. Both games are being sold on Steam in a bundle, or you could even get The Crew 2 for a limited time sale for 70% off its regular price.
The Crew 2 and The Crew Motorfest can be picked up for a combined price of €71.08, whilst the Gold Edition for The Crew 2 is currently €14.99.
