OutRun Movie in Development with Michael Bay and Sydney Sweeney Attached

The famed Sega arcade racer is going to be getting the big screen treatment courtesy of a famed Transformers director and starring one of the leads of Euphoria and Anyone But You.

OutRun is a game that many sim racers will be aware of, developed by Yu Suzuki of Sega back in 1986 which would have players driving a Ferrari Testarossa from one side of the United States to the other. Back in 2023, we released an article detailing the history of the series, but little did we imagine the news of a movie adaptation. Well, here we are!

Universal is behind the project and both Michael Bay and Sydney Sweeney are already attached to produce the movie, with Bay set to direct and Sweeney set to take on an on-screen role. The script is set to be penned by Jayson Rothwell, whose most prolific work includes the Mads Mikkelsen-led Polar on Netflix and the 2012 horror film Silent Night.

OutRun: Another Racing Game Movie

Adaptations of movies based on racing games have increased exponentially over the years, the first major example being one based on the Need for Speed franchise starring Aaron Paul. That movie - which released in 2014 - may have done well at the box office but it was lampooned by critics and audiences.

Plus more recently, there was a movie centred around Gran Turismo, although less based on the games themselves and more on the true story of a gamer who became a real life racing driver. Sega themselves have seen a lot of success with their three movie adaptations of their flagship property Sonic the Hedgehog, so perhaps no surprise that a film based on OutRun has been given the green light.

Though the question ought to be now, what kind of plot could be conjured up for an OutRun movie? Well here is a rather interesting fact: the game was actually inspired by The Cannonball Run, a 1981 movie starring Burt Reynolds, Roger Moore, Dean Martin and Jackie Chan.

The movie is centred on an illegal cross-country open road race, based on a real life unsanctioned event that ran five times during the 1970s. It was named the Cannonball Baker Sea-to-Shining-Sea Memorial Trophy Dash (named after motorcycle and automobile racer Erwin 'Cannonball' Baker).

Competitors ran from the east to west coast of the United States in a near 3,000 mile journey. The fastest time came in the form of a team competing in a Jaguar XJ-S in the final running of the event, clocking in at just under 33 hours. Apparently, Yu Suzuki when thinking of a game to develop was really inspired by this movie.

With all that in mind, it is not unreasonable to say that the potential plot of an OutRun movie may follow this same structure. Plus, having Sweeney involved could hint that her role may be the protagonist's romantic interest (who in OutRun 2006 is called Clarissa), providing them with requests to impress her during the run and giving a letter grade at the end.

I have a feeling that this could have a lot of fans if they manage to implement a kickass Synthwave soundtrack. That whole retrowave subgenre already screams 1980s, so it could fit if they chose to stick to that decade 🤔

'must've been glued to the past. Didn't know any about newer versions! Raced these two versions back in the day

And yes, of course we have to dig up Burt, Roger, Dean, Farrah, Sammy Davis Jr., etc. so that they, along with Jackie Chan, can make a movie version of the game title, since they are the only ones who can do it with a fairly authentic feel.

The ZX spectrum version was terrible and the soundtrack actually game on a cassette as well if I remember correctly. My mate had a Master System which was an improvement and my brother had an Amiga with Turbo Outrun. It wasn't until MAME that I actually left like I could really play Outrun at home.

The ZX Spectrum version was faster than the Amstrad CPC version! Apart from the stages without road lines (like the desert) which were a touch smoother!

I remember downloading the arcade ROM for the old System16 emulator (had it in before MAME). It was about a 300kb download via dial-up modem and took about 30 minutes to download back then :-D

If Sydney Sweeney isn't the main protagonist lead lady, then what is this even about? Sabine Schmitz is looking down from such great heights with great expectations.

Could they mix in a Ryo Hazuki easter egg and set for later time, tie ins of some more of Yu's world to film?

Still so many opportunities for NoHesi innuendos in a film like this if they want to keep it cool for the kids. so much axe body spray and morose hoodie marketing and sales potential...

notice no women here..

With the era of great fun getting Coors from Texarkana to ATL, or NY to LA escapades time long gone, it will surely be quite the expected Hollywood la la land extreme disbelief scenario. The surveillance oppression state is so much more extreme than it was in the 1980s. Though if this is going to take a horror movie approach, that fits with state of things now.

Yet, the under twenty seven hour run from NYC to LA during the pandemic, when there was near zero people on the interstate highways, was quite the feat. Without another pandemic shutdown, something that makes deportation/death sentence without due process to an El Salvadorian maximum security penitentiary is becoming more and more fantasy. Sadly we'll likely never even hear of those who try again - they'll just be disappeared.. unity through faith..

When infrastructure totally collapse, it will literally no longer be possible without a Mach 5 equipped Grand Canyon auto jacks jumper button.

It would be hilarious to see Jann Mardenborough from Gran Turismo movie make a cameo, 🤣 Possibly to over hear some twats say to Sydney that she will never be a real race car driver playing a simcade like Outrun at Magarigawa Club .. Only later to have her working with Jann and beat him on track at the end credit scene.. Setting up the Outrun 2 Japan movie sequel..

Funny enough I was playing OutRun just yesterday and told my partner about how silly it would be to have a movie that goes full nostalgiabait for millennials. A few name drops here and there, a more gritty look and a name reduced to just something like "Outrunners" or whatever (i know thats the name of one of the games.). Complete with the trailer using a dramatic epic trailer version of Magical Sound Shower or something.

Turn on the pc, log onto Overtake (and GTPlanet) and this is the first thing I see. I was granted the gift of prophecy, but wasted it on an OutRun movie D:

That said, expectations are absolutely low.

As an absolute fan of the only two true, real films about motorsport, I simply have to comment here.
My driver name and profile picture say it all, right?
That's it.
And yes, I still remember Outrun from the arcades of the 80s. In 1987, I was finally allowed in. I became an adult. A quick explanation for those not living in Germany:
You have to be of legal age to be allowed in arcades. That's the law.
It cost me countless West German one-mark coins. No computer or console version comes close.
If such an arcade machine weren't so expensive, converting one into a motion rig would be a dream.
The same goes for the absolutely iconic motorcycle game Hang-on.
Oh, those were the good times, but today's home technology has overtaken these old things and left them flat.
What is there to show in this film that hasn't already been shown in all the other films?
What is supposed to be shown in this film that hasn't already been shown in all the other films?
Including the absolute nonsense where, for example, sports cars flee from air-to-ground missiles, cross a collapsing suspension bridge, or fly from skyscrapers into the third-story windows of the opposite building to escape through the office. In comparison, the physics in our racing games are 100% hyperreal. It's probably for precisely these reasons that I haven't watched a single Fast & Furious film yet, and I never will.
But maybe the story and the setting will also make it a trip back to the 1980s, spiced with a bit of humor and slapstick. Who knows?
Unfortunately, you see a Testarossa in films far too rarely. Along with the F40, it's one of the last real Ferraris.
In my opinion.
And before we get started.
Miami Vice is a series. The feature film is a complete disappointment.
Have a nice weekend everyone
