As the dust settles on the Chinese Grand Prix, Oscar Piastri and McLaren walk out as winners. With Japan in two weeks, some drivers can look forward to a competitive showdown, and others have much catching up to do.

From dominant performances in papaya to illegal prancing horses, the Chinese Grand Prix cooked up a storm, with the McLaren duo coming out on top over George Russell in third and defending champion Max Verstappen trailing behind in fourth.

McLaren stamp their authority

With doubters sufficiently stifled, McLaren waltzed away from the Shanghai International Circuit with a 1-2 in the bag and maximum points on Sunday. The pace of Oscar in qualifying was almost unbelievable, and that dominant nature continued throughout the race.

Despite driving an impressive race, George Russell's Mercedes was no real danger to the papaya pairing until the last ten laps, when Norris' brake pedal started to give him trouble.

With Piastri missing out on an almost guaranteed points haul last weekend at the season opener, this weekend is "What he deserved". The Aussie ended the season-opening Australian Grand Prix in ninth – due to a synchronised gravel trap visit with his teammate, Norris, in the wet conditions, dropping him down the order.

“It's been an incredible weekend from start to finish. The car's been pretty mega the whole time. I think today was a bit of a surprise with how the tyres behaved, but I'm just super proud of the whole weekend." - Oscar Piastri, McLaren

Have we seen the last of Liam Lawson?

After the race, Red Bull Team Principal Christian Horner faced a relentless barrage of nosy Journalists asking questions about Liam Lawson's Formula 1 future following arguably a worse performance than in Melbourne.

Lawson arrived at the Shanghai International Circuit aiming to put a challenging debut behind him, but unfortunately, the 23-year-old New Zealander has done quite the opposite and given himself an enormous mountain to climb.

His problem is his lack of experience, he still hasn't completed a full season! - Fexcooper

Red Bull pulled Lawson's car from Parc Ferme to make significant set-up changes ahead of Sunday's Grand Prix, meaning Lawson would have to start from the pit lane for the second successive weekend. The miserable fifteenth-place finish was eventually bumped to a twelfth with a trio of post-race disqualifications for both Ferraris and Pierre Gasly in his Alpine.

When Horner was pressed for an answer on how long Red Bull could afford performances from their second driver, the boss had this to say:

“I think Liam's had a tough couple of races, a tough weekend here. We elected to take him off the grid, out of Parce Ferme, to do a significant set-up change, so we managed to get 56 laps of reasonable data from that. Obviously, we’ll take that away, we’ll have a good look at it, and as a group we’ll do our best to support him.” - Chrisitan Horner, Red Bull

Ferrari fall at the final hurdle

Ferrari faced a disastrous outcome after the flag fell at the Chinese Grand Prix. Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton were disqualified after finishing fifth and sixth, respectively, on the road. The FIA's post-race scrutineering revealed two separate technical breaches.

Leclerc's SF-25 was found to weigh 1 kg less than the minimum of 800 kilograms, a consequence Ferrari attributed to high tyre wear on his one-stop strategy. Meanwhile, Hamilton's car was disqualified due to excessive skid block wear, with the rear skid measuring below the required 9mm thickness—a miscalculation Ferrari admitted was a "small margin" error.

This double disqualification, a first in Ferrari's storied history, stripped the team of 18 crucial points. After just two races, Ferrari were fifth in the Constructors' Championship, 61 points behind leaders McLaren.

A document released following the hearing reads: “The plank assembly of Car 44 was measured and found to be 8.6mm (LHS), 8.6mm (car centerline) and 8.5mm (RHS). This is below the minimum thickness of 9mm specified under Article 3.5.9 of the Technical Regulations. - FIA

Not before Suzuka I don't think.
He has a pole there in Super Formula.
If he can't deliver decent weekend then I would throw Yuki in for Bahrain.
More likely swapping Liam will be better for Liam.

Max's driving style is so unique that none of his team mates could handle the car. After Danny Ric, Gasly, Albon, Perez, and Lawson, it is clear that this is Red Bull's problem, not their second drivers'. They should build two different cars that suit both Max and their 2nd driver.

I wouldn't say this goes back as far as Danny Ric, remember that the RB cars Danny Ric drove where from 7 to 11 years older and a complete generational change from what we have now.

Also in the two complete seasons they were team mates they were pretty even. In 2017 Danny Ric beat Max with them coming in 5th and 6th respectively, and in 2018 Max beat Danny Ric with them being 4th and 6th respectively.

In the subsequent two seasons Max managed 3rd in drivers standings, something that Danny Ric had already previously achieved for RB. In that respect I don't think there was that much between them.

That said, Danny Ric and Max have very similar driving styles with both preferring pointy oversteery cars, a trait that seems to be part of Red Bulls DNA, and one that Danny Ric exploited on many occasions with his ability to brake late and get the car rotated into the corner.

Certainly I agree that the car is designed around Max to an extent, but the car has historically always had these traits, and I think the modern F1 driver is more used to a slightly understeery car. This means another driver entering Red Bull may well find it difficult to adapt. The flipside is also true in that when Danny Ric went to McLaren he simply couldn't gel with the understeery nature of the car.

Sooner or later I think Red Bull will have to move to more benign handling characteristics, but while the car suits Max and Max is in contention for the WDC it's not likely to happen.

As a Ferrari fan... honestly I am more bothered by the lack of performance compared to the Sprint than the DSQ. As positives it's nice to see Hamilton being a team player despite the FOM radio message coverage pushing the opposite. Leclerc also came alive despite the unimpressive run thus far this weekend. Whatever, they need to regroup and get back that fire that I felt in the latter half of last year. Let's not forget they were close in the constructors, no small feat.

If Ferrari is a disaster than Racing Bulls are... ugh... poor Yuki and Isack, getting screwed by poor decisions from the pit wall again. Yuki especially would have a lot of points at this point. That wing failure was at least less heartbreaking.

Speaking of Yuki and looking at Lawson - Red Bull has learned nothing from Gasly and Albon. Liam needs time, putting him into the deep so quickly was a mistake. He needs a more forgiving environment, but looking at the Red Bull track record, if he gets demoted he never comes back. Yuki, I think, has nothing to lose if given a chance at Red Bull - he's obviously not getting renewed in the junior team, and if he manages to be fast in Red Bull he's got a future secured either there or in another team. Also, screw Red Bull and Racing Bulls, that I cannot use the RB short form anymore. If they put Isack into Red Bull, that would be a peak crazy desicion.

Impressive from Haas especially after seemingly being lost in Melbourne. Ciao. :roflmao: How the Bear managed to keep pace in those old mediums, respect.
