What Makes Sim Racing Fun For The OverTake Community?

A rather broad question when taken at face value, but some of the replies and results from one of our previous community polls asking the question, What makes racing fun for you?, were very insightful.

What does the OverTake Community think?

The OverTake community loves a good scrap on the track. With just fifty-seven votes for leading every lap, it's clear to see that fighting in the mid-pack is much more entertaining than leading from pole for our community.

"Having a battle, even if you lose it, is great fun, racing for a lap or 10 is great fun." - Aiden237

Coming in a close second was finishing the race with a clean record, no scratches or damage to any mechanical elements or bodywork. This can be hard, especially when racing online against unpredictable opponents, but when it does occur and you have a fantastic, clean race, it's a feeling like no other in the world of sim racing.

"Clean, close door rubbing action, great battles, side by side thrills from racing people you can trust" - bueller

With both of these categories falling under the "Clean Racing" banner, it is great to see that sportsmanship is at the top of the list for most of our community that participated in this poll. Our Racing Club is built on the mantra of clean racing, so seeing such crossover is fantastic!

Other Results

Some of the smaller bars on our horizontal bar chart of results show that qualifying on pole and leading the pack down to turn one is not top of the wanted list for sim racers, somewhat of a surprise, but the action happens further back.

The chances are that if there was something on the line other than just the driver or safety rating, this stat might rise slightly, but regardless, just sixty-one votes put Qualifying in last place, only losing out to "lead every lap".

Leading every lap coming in last place, ironically, comes as no surprise. Although it can be a significant ego boost when racing online, it's more like putting in qualifying lap after qualifying lap, rather than getting stuck into some great racing with friends or on-track rivals.

Finally, we had a lot of our community describe the emotions behind a race, and it all comes back to the sim racing mantra of "The cars and tracks might not be real, but the racing is.

"The biggest rush comes from hitting the apexes just right, chaining corners with precision, and feeling the car dance on the edge of grip." - gemmalyly

"Driving an 2.4 hour endurance race without a crash or spin and keeping a consistent pace trought it
Capitalizing on the chaos at the start or end of a race, those high adrenaline moments" - Fecahama

"The feeling of speed, the sound of the engine, the adrenaline..." - degas

We had a great turnout, with just over seven hundred and forty voters across the poll. The next poll is currently live on our website, "Assetto Corsa Evo: Which Mods are you most looking forward to?" Just look to the right-hand side of your screen and get involved!

Fun is fair. Fair is rules that keep the playing field level. When it is fair, it is about enjoying every moment of the drive. You do your best and know everyone else is too and the results reflect things being balanced against cheating and exploitation. Sports is not gambling. While gambling on sports may be a thing, feeling like surviving a race, should not be a lottery.

Yesterday, setting Pole position for Nations Cup 2025 World Series and then getting hit off track at the start and getting a penalty slow down was NOT FUN. Double or really triple whammy. 🙀 I was expecting to have some good racing possibly, with 2nd place likely to stay close behind if they kept my draft, but it just became me 4 seconds back, unable to get a draft and us top 2 pulling away from the rest of the field. I set the fastest race lap, but lost my P1 and clean race... for getting hit from the back off track, at the start.. why? This was after avoiding a defensive line to avoid being hit even harder. 🤷‍♀️ Without proper motorsport rules, it is just pretend that it is even remotely like racing.

It's clear why mario kart is the top racing game - The rules are clear, for all their silliness, and they are enforced. This is fundamentally what every creature expects from each other. Don't hoard the bananas.

This goes for AI especially, offline in single player or online when filling a grid, if the AI is not penalized and held to the same rules, it is not fun.

Not fair = not fun but frustrating.

As a senior citizen, sim racing has really helped me sharpen my reflexes. The ability to avoid contact with others during racing has been immensely instrumental in keeping me from hitting pedestrians when I am driving on the sidewalk. :whistling:

Good thing you are simracing and not playing GTA then 🫣
