Breaking Down The New F1 Movie Trailer

We are just over a month away from the F1 movie directed by Top Gun: Maverick's Joseph Kosinski releasing in cinemas, and the extensive main trailer has just been revealed. Here is our breakdown of it!

The F1 movie starring Brad Pitt is not far out, with the black and gold Apex team cars being filmed onsite at Grand Prix for the past two years and a tie-in with the upcoming F1 25 game. Also starring alongside Pitt are Damson Idris (Snowfall), Kerry Condon (Better Call Saul), and Javier Bardem (No Country for Old Men, Skyfall).

We have spoken at length about previous teasers for the film, but we now have the first main trailer for the movie. So here we are again, breaking down the contents of the F1 trailer!

F1 Movie Trailer

The trailer starts with establishing Pitt's character Sonny Hayes as a bit of a Maverick who bows to nobody, with his race engineer and love interest Kate (Condon) hammering the point home that you can only succeed when you work as a team, reminding him the livelihoods of everyone in the team are reliant on the drivers getting good results and being professional.

Of course, that last part leads seamlessly into the tension between Hayes and the Apex team's rising star driver Joshua Pearce (Idris), with the latter making a dig at Hayes' age in a press conference. The film's synopsis states that Hayes has come out of retirement to mentor Pearce, but the young driver states he will not be some "grateful kid who will bend the knee to an old timer".

Team principal Ruben Cervantes (Bardem) goes on to say "I should never have pulled you into this".

In the trailer, it would appear that Pearce will endure an airborne crash at some point. Image: Warner Bros

From that point on, it is noticeably vague. The action scenes depict quite a few instances of the drivers crashing, like an airborne crash for Pearce (akin to Mark Webber's Valencia 2010 crash) and Hayes running from a burning car (like Romain Grosjean in Bahrain 2020). Plus, whilst only the crash itself is depicted in the trailer, we know from the Las Vegas GP last year that Hayes collapses on track after getting out of his car following a heavy collision.

Additionally, maybe a few eagle eyed F1 history buffs will recognise the snippet of the trailer that depicts the first corner incident between Charles Leclerc and Sergio Pérez in Mexico City 2023. Then towards the end at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, Hayes and Pearce appear to exchange words during a race stoppage followed by Hayes performing a switchback on a Ferrari. Maybe to take a win?

Ultimately, whilst a trailer's job is to not give everything away and intrigue us, there is not a whole lot from this trailer we can work with other than a driver is making a comeback to F1, his teammate does not like him and there are quite a few crashes. Does sound a lot like the Sylvester Stallone movie Driven, but hopefully with better visual FX.

We will have to go to the cinema to find out for ourselves what this movie will end up being, with F1 releasing on June 25, and releasing in the US on June 27. To tidy you over until then, we at OverTake have been reviewing a load of racing movies, check out our reviews of the Senna mini-series, Rush, Ford v Ferrari, Grand Prix and Ferrari.

Our next review? The Le Mans movie from 1971, before we move on to the review of the upcoming F1 movie.

Looking forward to this, seems similar to F1 Braking Point

Who cares honestly? The movie was great. The car fragments falling off look incredible for 2001, the street car chase is entertaining, the coin trick too, the final dash where Sylvester rips off his wheel but keeps going and the part where they keep him in the pitlane for a full lap just for him to come out and block the rival threatening to win are all mega fun to watch
I think you're on glue.

Its a movie not a documentary. You are all acting like this is going to be a David Attenborough or Ken Burns documentary about F1 and not a multi-million dollar movie. Its a movie, not real life. Get over it. If you don't like it, don't watch it. You're not being forced to watch it or even pay money to see it. Simple as that. Don't like it, don't watch it?

Which poor sod will be forever immortalised in the credits as the “Formula 1 Racing Consultant” who had to sit there all day going, “that would never happen, you can’t do that” only to be completely ignored :)
Probably the same guy who is one of the most followed and commerically successful sports celebs on the planet. Not so certain he is, poor or sad, or is often ignored. If anything, his voice in the sport often gets some of the most attention....

Sure Id agree if someone said he is, questionable at times with fashion or on his views, regards some topics, but take those or leave them. Some may even go as far to say, few other of his competitors command the experience or might have even been deemed as good or a better choice for such role.

I think. It's fair to say, F1 as an orginasation, the teams and even the FIA have done as much to incorporate authenticty into this movie. Visually, in cinematography, including the movies audio aspects, it should at least deliver the thrill, action fans expect in a summer blockbuster release.

Maybe not Tom Cruise level of "pushing the boundaries" in being more than a lead actor. Just look at this video, the camera setup is incredible and I don't see any issues with Brad, clearly he was devoted to the project...

It's got potential to be better than some of you expect...

I think it was the first 30 seconds of the teaser trailer that had me questioning it’s take on Formula 1

“building a car for combat” is a bit Days of Thunder.

The on track action looks quite cool and intense, but lines like the one above have me questioning the context it will be set in.

For his next role, Mr. Pitt portrays a former hockey goaltender, who as 62 year old Zamboni driver wins the Stanley Cup with the Toronto Maple Leafs.

I guess, some look past corny or cocky lines, but they play a role in many movies...

Ah so the F1 movie is setting out to be a comedy like Taladega Nights, I wasn’t getting that from the trailers I thought it was meant to be a drama. Based on the rest of the trailer they need to get some more jokes in for that to work :)

My favorite scene in that movie is still the one when he thinks he's on fire. That's comedy gold!!

"He's trying to put the non-existent fire out!"
"Now that's a teammate right there!"

There was a time when F1 was a motorsport for enthusiasts. It hasn't been that way for a while now and is changed in a "money making product". The NetFlix series tries to sell F1 as entertainment to a large audience. This movie does the same. I'll probably see it because I can't resist. To see that it's a completely different kind of movie than "Rush". But not because I expect it to be a great movie for motorsport enthusiasts.

Motorsports enthusiasts want a documentary….
Sports is primarily for entertainment, always has been since the days of the colosseum.

This is a Hollywood movie , using F1 as a back drop .
it will be in the style of Top Gun .
It will feature a storyline of a comeback , a failure, a redemption story , a hard to get love interest, and a triumph against all odds , with a dash of American soldier mentality and pride in the great flag .
Take it in as that and I’m sure it will be a good watch .
Unless you don’t like Top gun because you think the numbers didn’t stack up, the physics were far fetched and no fighter pilots would ever fly under those conditions and nursing a hangover …
Then I guess you should just go watch a documentary… because nobody is making a movie for you anytime soon . Because it won’t return any revenue and will be found on Discovery channel on repeat in 6 months ..
