An unfortunate delivery experience.

How To Access BeamNG's Career Mode

For many BeamNG players, career mode is just the blank grey button on the main menu. However, the worst-kept secret on the forums used to be how to get beyond that button. Now you simply have to click the button, and you are in the mode.

Many users simply stumble across how to access it, while others go out of their way to discover the new mode. Regardless of how you find it, it's a quirky implementation from the developers to create real, genuine feedback from dedicated players of BeamNG

BeamNG's Career Mode Tutorial

As in any game, the tutorial is the first step on the ladder. You will be greeted with a base model Ibishu Covet and taught the basic controls of the game. Whilst not the most exciting section of any play-through, if you do happen to be brand new to the game, it is worth completing. Even if you are an experienced player, having it ticked off is worth it for the 100% completion score at the end.

The first tutorial screen you will be greeted with in the new tutorial

Once you have entered your vehicle, you are asked to crash it as hard as you can in classic BeamNG style into a static object in the car park. Once completed, you will be shown the screen to explain how the built-in insurance and towing services work. These additions are a key aspect for the career mode moving forward.

Dealerships and Purchasing Cars

Following the tutorial, you will be asked to drive to the nearest car dealership, Quarryside Auto Sales, in your newly repaired Covet. There, you will exit the car and walk through the doors of the dealership. Choosing your first car for your career mode is always a hard decision, but the rear-wheel drive 200BX and the All-wheel drive I-Series are both hot picks right now.

First Car.jpg

You can choose one of these three cars for your first vehicle

Before you choose your car, or any car in the future, make sure to check the mileage and the condition. Taking a test drive before you buy the car is a fantastic feature that allows you to see if the car is for you. This is especially important when purchasing trucks and lorries.

When buying a truck, make sure that the mileage is not too high. Otherwise, there can be mechanical problems that you will then have to fix. Also, make sure you try to find the limit of turning for your truck while it is moving. The T-series below has gone over that limit!

Worst-case scenario for this T-series delivering fuel to one of the many fuel stations around the West Coast USA map.

When buying a used car from one of the many dealerships around the West Coast USA map, always remember that sales tax and dealership fees are included. This realistic addition makes you feel exactly like a real car dealership does: out of pocket and ripped off.

Career Paths

BeamNG creates a much more diverse world compared to other career modes. Other racing titles mainly focus on the 'Championship’ aspect, and it is all about winning and nothing else. But not in BeamNG. Everything from tuning to new-car sales tax is simulated.

Career Path.jpg

The four career mode disciplines offer a variety of challenges.

The BeamNG career mode spans four separate pathways to which you can dedicate your playthrough. If you are more of a Jack of all trades, however, you can move between pathways at any time.

APM: A wide range of all disciplines of driving, aimed towards learning how each vehicle in the game works.

BMRA: If racing and motorsport related activites float your boat, then this is the career path for you!

Logistics: Re-enacts the life of delivery drivers. Deliver everything from expensive cars to your neighbour's moving-in boxes.

Freestyle: Act as a police officer or as a criminal in a multitude of police chases, as well as participating in minigames such as launching cannonballs towards a group of unsuspecting pigeons and wigeons

Garage and Car Damages

Whilst driving to events or free-roaming the map, accidents happen. But don't close the game just yet. The towing service can return your car to your garage where you can pay to have your car repaired. Regardless of the damage, you can try to continue, but towing is highly recommended to avoid causing more damage.

Tow Damage.jpg

Hill-climb spec Pessima was involved in a big traffic collision.

The price depends on the amount of damage. If you simply pinged a hub cap off or made a small dent in the rear bumper, your price will be minimal. However, if you happen to have a bigger accident and damage some major components, you could be looking at a repair bill in the thousands.

In its current state, the repairs return your car to the condition you bought it in. Further down the content plan, the addition of permanently damaged panels is being called for, as well as other permanent consequences of crashing.

Repair Bills.jpg

Repair costs for the Pessima's crash

The only difference between the quick repair and the normal repair currently is that the car is immediately finished, as opposed to having to wait 1 minute for the normal repair time. A better use of these options would be a partial repair service to save some money. Unpainted body panel replacements and steel wheels instead of alloys would be a fantastic addition to car repairs.

Does BeamNG Need a Storyline to Succeed?

If this thought has crossed your mind, you are not the only one. Interestingly, BeamNG experimented with the idea of a story mode through comic book-style depictions of the Utah map with multiple scenarios. A stuntman-style set of scenarios with a decked-out bus on the set of a movie resembling SPEED was also included. These ‘Campaigns’ were ultimately met with a lukewarm response from the community.

Ultimately, a storyline is not a necessity. Especially as the game has no playable or referenced characters outside of those in the Utah campaign missions. Having the cars as individual entities would certainly not work and make the game seem childish, totally undermining the hard work the developers have put into such a detailed simulator.

So Much More to Come!

BeamNG's career mode has much more to offer. Remember, this mode is in early access. This can only be positive for an already blooming title that, don't forget, has been one of the best-performing racing and driving games on Steam month in and month out for the whole year of 2024 and throughout 2025 so far.

Unless they update the materials and give them some realistic strength, weight and rigidity, i won't even bother even if the career turns out to be amazing. Everything behaves like it's made out of aluminum foil. Tires and suspensions also need more work. Suspension is too bouncy and tires have zero grip.
I'm glad it's not just me that thinks this. I see all these updates and think it's worth playing again only to load it up and find it just feels awful and you so much as bump a kerb in the city maps and the car folds up like a coke can

There have been some significant strength improvements in this update, with more to come! It might be worth giving it another shot :)

It's always more surprising when there is not any damage at all then when there is "too much", but that's just my experience with race cars and collisions, and even the HPDE street cars that just have an "off" let alone sticking a giant concrete block of curb to smash into in the way.

Tried it, career mode kinda gives a point of playing it. Apart from you do a delivery mission and have to walk back to your own car which can be the other side of the map.

Also I don't remember the anti aliasing being as rubbish as it is currently. Got it on ultra and building edges or electric lines look like it's off

With the delivery and walking issues, you can summon your vehicle to you for free using the new radial menu :) 👍

"Ultimately, a storyline is not a necessity."

Honestly, I'd go so far as to say that a story in a racing-oriented game is an active detriment.

I can not think of one single exception. Literally not one single story-based mode in a driving game has ever been good as far as I recall. TOCA Race Driver was probably the least off-putting, and even that was pretty bad.

This is especially true if the "story" revolves around some lame festival full of the most insufferable one-dimensional characters who speak purely in slang and/or hyperbole. I'm looking at you, Horizon. And NFS Pro Street. And the TDU series. And, and, and...

[EDIT to Add] I will say that there's probably a reason that most racing movies suck, and likely the same reason story modes in racing games also suck. The racing is the narrative, really, so slapping any story over it almost always feels hollow. Grand Prix, Days of Thunder, and Speed Racer are the only racing movies I can think of with fictional stories that actually work as a movie and not just a spectacle. (Before anyone says it, imo Le Mans is a terrible movie. I love it for what it is, but it is an objectively bad movie when evaluated on the story and filmography itself. Brilliant spectacle with amazing footage, and I watch it often because of that. I love it.)

Basically Roblox Mode was added, those are things a 4 years old can do in such game already (leaving the car, buying a new one, destroying it and then buying a new one or repairing the old one).
Im glad to see the racing community is so encouraging to new features to games and developers trying new things.

What a load of rubbish. Racing is about much more than just the cars and the drivers once the helmet is on. Everything has a human story to it which makes it more interesting. Without a story certain games (some racing games included) would just become back and forth repetitive rubbish with no depth.

How do you open that? I know that sounds stupid but I was only playing with the xbox controller because I'm lazy :roflmao:
It should be 'E' on the keyboard, or the right arrow on the keypad of the gamepad :) It will also bring up the option to get a taxi to and from different locations! :)

Started with the sedan. Bought a van. Then a box truck. Then a small semi and trailer. All very fast. Too fast i'd say. Then i got bored because the map is so small and my hardware wasn't good enough to run a decent amount of AI. Also, career mode in any game is boring if there's no competition.
But anyway, the worst problem with this game is that AI doesn't use the GPU but the CPU. It's terrible design. Your GPU will be joyriding because graphically it's not a heavy game, but for whatever reason they have tied AI to the CPU. GPUs are far more capable of simulating AI.
