Automobilista 2: New Content "Pretty Much Every Month" In 2025

Automobilista 2 Cadillac V-Series.R Daytona.jpg
After the milestone release of Automobilista 2 v1.6 kept Reiza Studios busy for most of 2024, 2025 is set to be "more frenetic" in terms of updates and content.

For Reiza Studios and Automobilista 2, 2024 was a big year. For most of it, the Brazilian studio kept very busy with the work on the milestone v1.6 update, which finally released in late November and elevated the sim's regular player numbers. However, this also meant that the rest of the year was rather scarce for other updates. But that is not supposed to become a habit that continues into 2025.

Quite the contrary, actually. "We have a lot of licenses that we scored last year, so you may expect 2025 to be more frenetic in terms of pace for updates", Reiza Founder and Lead Developer Renato Simioni told OverTake. "It's not going to be like last year. We had one big update and a couple of smaller ones, but we are going back to how it was in previous years."

This is a direct result of the launch of v1.6, as Simioni continued. "The game is in a different state. Now, it is at a solid enough point that we can focus on the details a little more." That means less fundamental changes like in v1.6 in favor of more polish and bug fixes in addition to the content, "because the content is a big part of what the concept of the game is", stated Simioni.

New Content To Be Added Frequently

While Reiza is working on additional features and fixes, Simioni also revealed that the studio is expanding to develop AMS2 further and add more content at an increased frequency. "On the content side, pretty much every month you are going to have an influx of cars and tracks", Reiza's Lead Dev revealed. Keep in mind that Reiza has been careful with giving deadlines in the recent past, so the "pretty much" part is most likely key - so expecting new content every single month without fail might not be the best approach.

However, more frequent content additions will also mean more fleshed out grids. "The game is going to grow substantially this year", continued Simioni. "We want to full out the collection to make it as complete as possible. Many of the existing classes are going to receive new cars, and we will have some new classes in areas that we haven't explored before."

Reiza forum users have recently had a look through Automobilista 2's game files and discovered a few interesting folders, apparently referencing an early 2000s version of Le Mans and period-correct cars such as the Audi R8 (the prototype, not the GT, of course), or US-based stock car racing. Both would fit with existing plans Reiza communicated in the past, namely a fourth Racin' USA DLC pack and historic Le Mans content.

"I think there are some hints, but I wouldn't take them as gospel", said Simioni. "There are things from Project CARS 2 that have to be there because of the way the code is structured. There are also some things that we are experimenting with and that might or might not come to the game."

Closing Content Gaps - Career Mode Not In 2025

Coupled with the new licenses Simioni mentioned and Reiza's goal to create a cohesive lineup of cars and tracks that cover plenty of ground throughout the years, 2025 might indeed turn out to be another great year for fans of the Brazilian sim. While some classes still have some considerable gaps, others like the F-HiTech Generation 2 - F1 1993 - already have a close-to-complete calendar represented if you are not looking period-correct circuits for each location. Reiza adding the fitting ones also does not seem unlikely, however.

The planned career mode that is already present in the main menu, although greyed out, would benefit from this as well - and that is the plan. Reiza wants to tie everything in AMS2 together via that mode, but first, the pieces need to be in place.

"It was always said that there will be a career mode in Automobilista 2, which is a way to connect all this assorted content that we have", explained Simioni. "That's why we need other content in there, and that is why it's going to be one of the last things we do." Patience is needed, then, as Simioni points out: "I don't expect it will see the light of day in 2025."

Career mode is a popular element in the F1 game series each year, but among more simulation-oriented titles, it has not really been a focal point in most cases when looking at releases of recent years. Project CARS 2 stands out in this regard with its different paths and tiers, and while the mode had a decent base, it did not really take off in the end.

Automobilista 2 Career Mode: Different Starting Points In Time

In AMS2, this could be different, especially considering the amount of historical content in the sim. Simioni: "We need to deliver all the content, and it needs to be working well, because career mode is going to be experienced in singleplayer. So the AI needs to be on a certain level for it to work best, because a career mode that's just a progression with races that are not really engaging and with incosistent levels of challenge - what is it worth, really?"

Instead, Reiza wants to create a proper experience, "really interesting, really dynamic, really uncertain, as a real career would be", continued Simioni. This should include "many pathways, so every time you play it is not necessarily going to be the same as the last time."

The concept for career mode is still being worked on, but has its roots in 2019 when Simioni initially penned his ideas for it. "But we are always adding to it. It's going to be very much driver-centric for the most part, and the interesting part is that you can start as a Brazilian driver in the 60s, or you can be a British driver in the 80s, or a modern driver in the United States and take your timeline from that point", explained Simioni. "There are so many possibilities in terms of where to start, where to go and how it all develops."

Simioni realizes that there is still a lot of work to do to get to that point, in part because older content will not be left behind: "Everything follows the same criteria, the same cohesive approach. We are constantly revising old content to bring it up to the standards. As we improve the standards, we never leave older content behind."

AMS2 Hotfix To Wrap Up v1.6 Development Cycle

This also goes for the AI issues that have become apparent around the real-life Daytona 24 event in late January, as AI cars would pit too frequently during longer races or simply mess up and cause enormous pileups in certain corners. To improve this and to wrap up the v1.6 development cycle, a hotfix is expected to be released shortly.

And then, the wait for the more frequent updates begins.

What are your wishes for Automobilista 2's career mode? Let us know in the comments below and join the discussion in our AMS2 forum!

Fix the physics first. Cars are still too floaty and slidey. Cold tyres/off road physics are grossly exaggerated. Then fix the AI, then focus on content.

I'm glad they're fixing the Daytona AI, but doing it several days after the race when most people have moved on demonstrates really poor business sense. Could have been an excellent way to draw new players in with a bit of strategy and effort on the public comms front, now you probably lost anyone who tried the game for the first time to check out the licenced IMSA content.
Yep... release official IMSA cars, core improvements, AI "improvements", woow! Hype!

Then you try the official Daytona with the official IMSA classes and realize the experience was much better in PC2.

In Daytona season I used to do multiclass practice, shorter races, longer races, whatever for a week at Daytona. This AMS2 situation completely killed that vibe... Dare I say it would have been a lot better with the 1.5 AI.

When there's that many bugs left on the table that the last 2 threads for this game were mainly complaints about old content AI issues?

Ooooooooof...

If their customer service was better maybe I'd give them more slack for needing to make money somehow, but they don't do that job well enough for that old chestnut to count...
I do remember one interaction with users over here when it was called RD, where a column had been written and folks were obviously venting their spleens in frustration over really rather blatant issues the title was having and then Renato waded in and called everyone keyboard warriors and trolls for having the temerity to point these out in public. That wasn't a great day for Reiza in my books.

The Reiza forum at that time was also chock-full of "yes men", so I'm guessing they couldn't get a good reading on which way the title was heading. During AMS 1 beta development the crowd was different, you could point stuff out without being lynched/shouted down - it was great! Not entirely sure if the situation has improved these days over there, but each and every update we were told the physics were now correct, meaning what? They weren't earlier on when folks were complaining and fanbois were arguing that the title felt right...?

Hopefully AMS 2 does get there though, I'm beginning to find things I enjoy in the title so it's nice to bounce between LMU, AC and now AMS2.

I want a proper offline game because i don't want to race only when people are available, only the cars that they want to race, against aliens i know i will never be able to catch unless i would practice all day every day, i want to be able to drive ANY car, track, weather, settings i want without hearing anyone's stupid complains, and i don't want to waste my time driving against people with zero spatial awareness that will ruin my 2 hour race because they cannot be bothered to use the radar/relative leaderboard/CrewChief/virtual mirror ... my list goes on, i play AMS2 only online now because the AI is garbage. The only good games with proper AI were F1 22 and 23, that is the benchmark of amazing AI working as it should ! Racing against people can absolutely suck all enjoyment out of games when the race goes badly or when there is no way to drive cars you actually want to.

I know it is expensive but Iracing does very good AI,custom championships with customizable AI drivers.Its actually more like real life racing than racing in sessions with other sim racers.You can also download very good AI packs from Trading Paints.

I've been playing a few full seasons in AMS2, kinda making my own little "career" starting in 80s F1, and now halfway through 1986 (in a Minardi!).

Over the course of the seasons I always stumble upon some pretty annoying bugs or things I have to work around all the time. My general feeling is that the game has a very solid base/gameplay but the "fit and finish" is all over. Be it the menus, the wacky stuff that happens between sessions, weird AI behaviours/strategy etc.

I know the people who make the content are not the same ones who do the coding, but I fear that this push for more and more content might detract from simply looking at the whole thing and making it real solid, stable, a game you can trust to set up a race in and go to town. Just judging from the Daytona 2.4 report here on Overtake, writer said they needed a few restarts before they could properly race, even.

I love the driving, the nature of the content - the Brazilian, the American stuff, all very unique and different - and even the general vibe/atmosphere of the game. But even my partner here knows that every 1 out of 2 races I'm whining "oh no, the game Automobilista'd again".

(This time, DNF'd because the fuel prediction in the setup menu was over 10 laps off)

What is sure to come in 2025:

* Le Mans Historical (2 versions, 2000s and 1970s);
* One or two car packs (LMP1? Toyota? Porsche 917K? Lamborghini pt 2?)
* 2025 Brazilian Stock Car (new regulations, SUVs = Chevrolet Tracker, Toyota Corolla, Mitsubishi Eclipse);
* A new circuit for BR Stock Car (either a street circuit in Brazil or a grade 2 circuit in Uruguay);

What could come in 2025:

* A 3rd endurance car pack (Acura? Aston Martin? Ford?);
* Racin' USA part 4 (a new track and a new class?);
* NASCAR Brasil (and maybe an update for Curvelo track, adding the new oval layout).

I really enjoy AMS2. But for some reason I just can't play it in cockpit view due to the feel. I'm not even sure what it is. Play it only in the camera angle behind the car as I would play Gran Turismo. Just had a bash 1 hour race at Daytona in the Whelen Cadillac with GT3 cars in the field. 25x time scale and a mandatory pit stop - a great experience, enjoyed the morning fog. I recommend!!!

There are camera head movement adjustments that can make the game feel floaty. Not sure if you have tried the suggestions in the below article, but they might help. Feels much better to me after switching Legacy Head Movement.

Does AMS2 AI need further improvements? Yes.
Is this currently the best AI out of all sims? Yes.

For the content, we obviously all want FERRARI. It would also be good for the studio, the sim, and the players to get a complete IMSA WeatherTech lineup. Or, if they weren't able to secure all the licenses, make it super easy for the modders to bring the missing cars and liveries (help them directly!).

As far as missing classes are concerned: bring TCR or BTCC! This would be super popular DLC, I'm sure.

No need to discuss it, because there are too many opinions that also diverge naturally.

But what bothers me about AMS2 AI is the lack of any randomness. It's always the same AI ́s that are preset to win almost every race. In general, the performances of the AI opponents are quite robotic, you could say almost scripted. Of course it's not, but it feels like it

:confused: Respect for that ! I find the AMS2 chase cam is the worst of all games i ever played in my life.
I do not use it, but if i try for fun i am unable to do 1 corner :D

Btw. REIZA !!! Please add finally some more championship slots into the game !

Thankyou for your post... If I could send kudos or a steam award that would get one for sure...

It's great to be reminded of the AMS1 days when it wasn't so toxic on the Reiza forums and they focused on the art of sim racing by allowing critical thinkers the freedom to post...

Sadly going by the way the Reiza staff act publicly outside of their forums and the amount of other people I've seen state it's toxic and have given up commenting on that forum as a result it's safe to say it hasn't changed since I stopped visiting it for the same reasons...

Hopefully they can turn it around and realise that the steam charts are showing that it's a majority of people that have bugs in their title, not a small minority that have been labelled as "haters" by the developers...

Because the content in the game isn't what is stopping that number from rising and it has some great potential to be something more than just another car game... But in the state it is now where I hear "Hard luck mate" because of one of the many bugs that could force someone to retire more than in any other title... It has a long way to go...

Im probably one of the reiza staff you speak of. We have plenty of history. All that aside, why do you constantly go into threads about a game you obviously dislike, with developers you dislike, and continue to dump all over the game. We get it, it isnt for you. The games you seem to have an infatuation with have plenty of chats, go and play there.

Off you go champ.

As a fan of BigMag back then, being at the fences, I need a modern and official addition to the otherwise very nice GTR2 mods of the Panoz LMP-1 Roadster-S 'Batmobile'.

Yes, it has been great to enjoy it in VR after CrewChief's VR plugin for GTR2, as well as in the mod versions for rF1, which I have converted to AMS1, in order to race it in VR via CC AMS1 VR plug-in.

But a modern version, in a second to none VR platform, and where you finally don't hold back with the sound nuances and especially the volume, then I will be both stimulated and satisfied.

Especially if Reiza manages to tame the madness so that the core sim response seems believable.

Having had my ear canals and bones completely torn open every time this beast passed a few meters from me almost 26 years ago, as well as being able to visually see the monster, that is my very own highlight as a present guest around Circuit de la Sarthe, the years I was there.
if you play Pcars2, you should defintely get the VRC mod (reasonably priced). There's another 2000 proto mod available too, the grid on Pcars2 is really nice.
