Le Mans Ultimate: Console Port Talks "A Step Further"

Le Mans Ultimate is looking more and more likely to come to consoles: Motorsport Games and Studio 397 are in talks about a console port for the official WEC game.

Sportscar racing enjoys quite some momentum in 2025: Multiple manufacturers are looking to join the Hypercar grid, excitement for the 2025 Le Mans 24 Hours is already ramping up again, and fans are fascinated by the current crop of top-level endurance machinery.

Meanwhile, Le Mans Ultimate, the official WEC game, is in a good position as well. Player numbers are way above what they were in 2024, and even though the upcoming update that will complete the 2024 content and introduce online driver swaps has been delayed, there is a lot of positivity surrounding the sim in the community.

There is significant interest in LMU, and it's evident at the actual WEC events that Studio 397 attends with simulators for hands-on experiences as well. Plenty of fans want to give the sim a go, and one of the most frequen questions appears to be: "Will it come to consoles as well?"

It is indeed intended to. In 2024 already, S397's parent company Motorsport Games stated that the efforts for a console version would be accelerated, but there have not been many news on Le Mans Ultimate on PlayStation or Xbox since.

LMU Console Version Drawing Closer?

This might soon change. "We got feedback from people willing to do the console port", Motorsport Games CEO Stephen Hood revealed when talking to OverTake. "We are a step further in this regard."

This means that it is not just a matter of MSG and S397 wanting to do it, but them trying to figure out how to actually do it by talking to potential partners that could do the port. As LMU is the official WEC game, this step would make a lot of sense from the points of view of the ACO and FIA, too - the more fans you reach, the better, you could say.

Traditionally, console sim racers have not been blessed with many "hardcore" sims to choose form. Assetto Corsa Competizione stands out, the Project CARS series tried as well, and the original Assetto Corsa is also available but lacking a lot even compared to the vanilla PC version. For rally enthusiasts, the DiRT Rally series and EA Sports WRC come to mind, though some consider those titles not to be simulators per se.

That said, there should be more options soon. Rennsport will release on consoles powered by a publishing deal with Nacon, Project Motor Racing aims to do the same this fall with GIANTS Software by their side. Assetto Corsa EVO is planned to be on PlayStation and Xbox eventually as well - so if Le Mans Ultimate would join the fray, players would have a handful of high-profile choice in addition to those that are already available.

LMU "Is Making Good Revenue"

Console version or not, development of Le Mans Ultimate is set to continue, with Motorsport Games in a better financial situation following the news that Pimax came aboard as an investor. "That gave us the breathing room we needed", remarked Hood. More interestingly, however, the MSG CEO also stated that "Le Mans Ultimate is making good revenue."

What helps is that the gap between consoles and PCs is much smaller than it used to be in the early 2000s, for example, when the same title came in very different versions depending on your platform of choice. Hood himself stated in September 2024 that "we know our advanced simulation can run on current consoles" in light of the PlayStation 5 Pro announcement.

Hood also pointed out that the PC version is the priority still: "If we cannot get the PC version working and make more people happy there, I could not care less about doing a console version. We have launched what I think is a really solid simulation in LMU - let's get this right first, and everything else will come in time."

To be fair all they need to workout is how to get it running well on console it already plays the best of any sim with a gamepad. Same goes for rfactor2.

Only trouble is I really don't think a console will cope with this engine. It's pretty hardware intensive at times even for the best of pc's which was another part of the reason they used unreal engine for nascar ignition.

Since majority of the current Sim don't allow Mods anyway putting then on Console seems like a no brainer and a easy way to expand the player base, especially with the lower price of consoles against the PC .

I am not a console player and will probably never be one again, but I take this news as a great news.
LMU developed to be a nice addition to anyone interested in racing simulator, so, for the sake of our hobby, to have access to the large amount of player enjoying racing game on console, can only be good for LMU and for our community.

oh, that's what they work on, I understand why the developpement is slow....
These are two separate things from what I gathered. S397 is doing the PC version and only that, but there are talks with potential partners who could port that PC version to consoles. So it's not like S397 would have resources shift away from their current bread and butter - LMU on PC - to pour them into a console version that may well be on the horizon, but quite some distance away.

I don't quite understand how consoles can still be a thing here in 2025?
I left my last console in 1979.
I don't understand the continued popularity.
To me, a console is all about limitations.

LMU is great on a controller. The only two sims I know of (I have tried all the main ones except the new Assetto Corsa) which have reliably informative force feedback on a controller are LMU and Iracing. The controller vibrates with increasing severity the closer I am to losing control of the car, and the controller does not vibrate for any other reason. This gives me information about how far I can push in a manner that no other modern sims do.

How about this? I paid 400 bucks for the PS5. To get a decent PC (I can't build one, I need to buy one), I'd need to spend 1500, or rather 2K+. Could I afford it? Easily. Could I convince my wife to buy such PC? Zero chance. Does the PS5 have limitations? Absolutely. Can it fit into a lot of people's situation better than a PC? Absolutely.

2025 is going to be the year of PlayStation 5 Pro Sim Racing being the far and above Ultimate and making a lot of hot air noise makers eat crow. GT7, LMU, PMR, ACC, ACE - TXR, FH5 and Wreckfest 2 for incredible fun with toned down realism.

No more PC headaches, wasted time and endless frustration, just power on and race in seconds. DD+ or bust.

Will LMU get proper motorsport accountability and rules in place though?

Yeah where is the 1.0 update guys and are we going to get more tracks beyond that?

Not this console talk.... (my opinion..)
You purchased a Official WEC simulator. The program currently has all but one of the Official WEC tracks from 2023 through 2025(and that one is coming) so....if you wanted lots of tracks, perhaps, maybe, you might have made a better decision about which sim to purchase.

As to 1.0. No date has been forecast, nor do I expect one soon. Even if the features of the next update meet what MSG decides is a 1.0 release, they will still use the EA for debugging and further testing. Since they haven't fully settled yet on the new tire model for GT3s, I imagine getting the tire migrated to the GTE, LMP2, HY class will take some further time....(edit) MSG is targeting reaching the v1.0 state in 2025, but they have not indicated if that is summer, fall, or winter.

When you think about it...1.0 is an imaginary number. It really isn't stating the program is fully fleshed out and sorted, but rather it is indicating the Publisher no longer wants to invest in further new development. MSG could make a statement tomorrow saying the program has reached 1.0 status...even send a tiny upload to indicate that in the game, but nothing else would have changed.

The June update promises to be a rather large change, with added features and content. Will that suffice to reach 1.0? I'm sure MSG would much rather charge $79 dollars(or whatever the final price is) than the current EA price.

I was wondering if maybe with the June update coinciding with Le Mans 24h whether we may get some 2025 liveries too as a surprise. Maybe wishful thinking though

We have often mentioned the European Le Mans and Asian Le Mans series as possible expansion series for LMU.
There is one other lower tier series that uses GT3 and LMP3 cars, the Michelin Le Mans Cup. MLMC falls under the ACO/FIA umbrella and could, theoretically be a logical extension. Unfortunately there are only a few tracks used during the 2023-25 time frame that are different from current tracks in LMU.
Catalunya, Paul Ricard, Aragon, Mugello & Silverstone. There are a few tracks that were used by MLMC dating back to it's origin in 2017. Those would include the Red Bull Ring and Estoril. The rest of the circuits are already in LMU.

To clarify against some misinformation woven through this bit.

Console titles are not forbidden to have mods. It is a myth and nonsense to say a console can not have a title with mods.
