British Touring Car Championship Round 2 Preview: Brands Hatch

After the bright sunny opening round at Donington Park, the British Touring Car Championship moves to the east side of England for rounds four, five and six at Brands Hatch Indy.

Qualifying Overview

With Saturday's action in the books, the dust settles, and reigning champion Jake Hill will start at the front of the pack for race one's action tomorrow! The BMW's look strong as always at Brands Hatch, but the Hyundai drivers look just as hungry.

Do not write off the NAPA Fords, either. When the green flag is waved, all four Ford drivers will want to bolster their starting positions exponentially. Below is the summary of the top six shootout teams' qualifying results.

West Surrey Racing

In the heat of the unusually sunny English May weather, reigning champion Jake Hill put his WSR-run BMW on pole position after breaking the qualifying lap record. The WSR trio seemingly overcame the awful balance the BMW's struggled with in the opening rounds, with teammate Charles Rainford putting his BMW alongside Hill and young-gun Daryl DeLeon further back in 20th after losing his fastest lap to track limits violations.

“I just threw the world at it. I thought it might be on the cards in Q1 when we topped our group, and I thought ‘let’s have a go!’ so I’m thrilled. The Laser Tools Racing with MB Motorsport team have absolutely pulled it together and given me a car capable of being at the front. It’s my first pole at Brands too, back at home, so I’m leaving here a very happy man. As lovely as this new Goodyear Wingfoot Award is for taking pole, I am hopeful for a win tomorrow or at least a couple of podiums.” - Jake Hill, Laser Tools Racing with MB Motorsport

Charles Rainford.jpg

Charles Rainford will lineup second on the grid in just his second weekend in the championship. Image: BTCC.net

Last year, Colin Turkington claimed victory in races one and two in his BMW from pole, so can defending champion Jake Hill manage the same achievement? With two eager Team Vertu cars behind him, he will have to rely on Rainford to be willing to play the team game to guarantee a successful run.

On the other side of the garage, it was a disastrous qualifying session for Scotsman, Aiden Moffat. After setting purple sectors in early Q1, the BMW driver took too much kerb at Paddock Hill bend, sending his BMW sliding off into the gravel and eliminating him from qualifying and placing him twenty-fifth and last.

Napa Racing UK

It was a bad day to be an Ash Sutton fan, adoring a striking new livery, the three-time champion didn't make it out of Q1 with the heavy penalty of having just two seconds of boost available to him after his pair of race wins in Donington.

The other three NAPA Racing squad didn't enjoy the summer sun to much either with Daniel Rowbottom lining up alongside Sutton after suffering with a crippling migraine all day, limiting his ability to drive. Dan Cammish could only muster fifth, just behind the leading BMW's and the Team Vertu duo of Adam Morgan and Tom Ingram. Fourth driver, Sam Osbourne, will start from seventh, narrowly missing out on Q3 in a relatively impressive drive.

Team Vertu

With Ash Sutton being so far down the order due to the lack of boost, nobody expected a heavily ballasted Tom Ingram to make it to Q2, never mind make it fourth place overall. His teammate Adam Morgan lines up just in front of him in third.

The other duo of Tom Chilton and Michael Crees will lineup a disappointing fifteenth and sixteenth place after Chilton lost his best time to track limits, and Crees to several on-track errors that led to him being unable to post a clean time on the board.

Power Maxed Racing

Initially, a one-car entry in 2025 after a major sponsor dropped support at the last minute, nobody expected much of Power Maxed Racing heading into this season. Still, they have done what they do best and blasted everyone's expectations out of the water. Not only are they competitive, but they have both of their Vauxhall Astra shells on the grid, the second car being piloted by 2025 McLaren Cup class winner Nick Halstead from this weekend onwards.

Mikey Doble put in a serious lap time in the second part of qualifying to see his Astra into Q3. He would end up being sixth, a titanic effort for a team that was unsure if they would even be on the grid just a few weeks ago. New teammate Halstead was twenty-third on the grid, but he had only sat in the car less than 24 hours ago, so time will tell how he adjusts to the Vauxhall.

How to watch the BTCC

TOCA, the BTCC's organisers, announced that each race day of the 2025 season—including all support series races—will be streamed LIVE on the BTCC YouTube channel worldwide, with the exception of the UK and North America, which have existing broadcast arrangements.

The BTCC will be aired live in North America (US and Canada) for the first time, thanks to a new multi-year agreement with the RACER Network, which will stream live and on-demand as part of a long-term agreement with the championship.

All 30 races are scheduled to air on the main RACER channel, whilst the support series and extended BTCC highlights will be available to watch via the RACER+ App, the network's premium motorsports streaming platform. Race 1 will begin at 06:40 Eastern Time (ET) with Race 2 following at 09:05 ET and Race 3 closing out the day's racing at 12:10 ET.

Something weird is going on with the BOP this season. A few drivers have already alluded to it but they arent (as per TOCA's say so) arent allowed to mention it publicly. Not a chance that NAPA Ford has become that bad all of a sudden without some sort of boost change (which toca do a lot to make sure the title fight goes to round 10).

BMW's are treading thin ice too as theyve added weight inside the rear doors to help with the balance of the car but its against the rules as any extra weight has to be added within the body shell not whats attached to it. (this is coming from people in the know btw, either involved directly with the series or very close to it)

I wouldn't say the Ford has become any worse. Sutton won two of the three races at Donny, and Cammish was within thousandths of pole today. A twelve-second dictate of boost for Sutton over such a short lap was bound to make it almost impossible to break out of Q1, he said that in the pre-quali interview.

The weight to the doors thing was said live on air, so seeing as it is public knowledge now, surely they will be disqualified?

It would be investigated like when Subaru ran the Levorgs with the engines as low and far back as possible (not supposed to be able to with the common subframe assembly) for the lowest possible centre of gravity. Then make a decision, Subaru were never punished due to a loop hole in the rules which made the car pretty unstoppable in the hands of Sutton.

Interesting, let's hope for some competitive racing tomorrow with no amended results post-race for those BMW's then 😅

I hope its not a BMW walk over. I didnt really follow it today because i was watching the WEC plus not having a great time mental health wise so only saw the fp1,2 results then was quite surprised at how the qualifying shaped up. The fact Toyota GB arent really helping Speedworks to develop the Corolla is quite obvious too, they've got 3 mega quick drivers alongside their rookie and it seems none of them are having a great time with it. Taylor-Smith and Shedden were two drivers i expected right up the sharp end but seemingly something just isnt clicking with that car, which unfortunately seems to be a year on year trend with whoever drives it.

I seriously don't don't get this boost thing that's replaced success ballast. I was never a fan of artificially affecting a cars performance, but at least success ballast was easy to understand and did bring the racing closer. However this boost thing is an abomination - I mean just look at this

WTF is that about. This is supposed to be motor racing, not Dungeons & Dragons.

What next? Putting markers and sensors on the track so that when you drive over them you get a random power up? Throwing banana skins out of the windows?

This additional "gamification" of motorsport is quite frankly ruining it, and I think pretty much undesired by everybody except the organisers.

I think they've over thought it, why not just add 0.1 secs per championship point to the qualifying grid? that would mean an ever changing grid order with faster (more successful) cars always having to come through the field*, that way the fans would see the true speed of these cars at all times, with plenty of overtaking and challenges.

*unless they're so super fast that they still start at the front!

It's not just the overtake boost they mess with between each round. It's the actual turbo boost pressure too so say you have a really successful weekend like Napa did at Donington. Come next meeting they get a reduction in overtaking boost and then a reduction on the boost and therefore power the car makes. It's all done to make sure the title fight goes down to the final round every year.

Maybe they just need to switch to ELO rating the drivers. Why bother with reward weights and tacoz turboz boozt boyz ttb/D&D. 🤷‍♀️ A system designed for 2 people in a chess game that neither player can impact the outcome of the other's move choice, and the moves of the player are clear and simple for each piece makes total sense to use for racing where a few dozen racers are constantly in a highly dynamic ever changing set of situations and circumstances that each impacts all those around them.. ♟️

Oh wait 🛑 are they or are they not just trying to keep running down the points to keep the racers renting more time to elopoint? ⁉️ 🤑

It's pretty clear the biz types who have no clue are just trying to over-complicate the heck out of this and make nonsense while claiming it's better because, clearly over complicating makes the masses buy into it being "better". 👨‍💼 🤡

Next season when m$-OpenAI/spamazon/brawndo/et. al. offer up a massive sponsorship and chatty gibbity, the bloke from the local drink whose delusional hallucinations are only matched by it's confidence will just make up some great rules and balancing, right? ELOktrolytes! What could be better?! idiocracy for racing, woot woot. 🖥️ ⛳

post covid changes are clearly out of whack in many places.

So The BTCC is oficially the "Bamboozle Touring Car Championship" bought to you by Friends!

But really I haven't actually followed it since Matt Neal was running the family Primera... he won £250,000 for being the first privateer race winner

You dont get the rivalry in it like you used to it's like a load of rich mates going racing to bolster their commercial image. Even people like Matt Neal, Jason Plato have retired and not really been present in the paddock. Matt Neal turns up every now and then to do a bit of driver coaching but other than that he pulled the family team out of it at the end of 2023 I think it was and now the team dynamics workshops are used by Excelr8 as a base.

That said its still much better than any awful TCR series thanks to its unique rule set regarding the cars and common parts.
