The Last Garage Pulls Out From eRace Of Champions In March

One of the first major motorsport events to implement sim racing was the Race of Champions, and virtual drivers will seemingly have another chance of competing alongside the very best across all disciplines of racing.

From the 7th-8th of March, the Race of Champions will be back for the first time since their Snow & Ice event in Sweden back in 2023. Truly an event like no other, the top drivers from the worlds of F1, dirt racing, sportscars and even sim racing compete on as level a playing field as possible.

This time around, the Race of Champions will take place in Sydney within the same stadium that hosted the 2000 Summer Olympics. Subsequently, returning the event to the arena setting that it has been more commonly associated with throughout the past few years.

eROC: Sim Racers Against Motorsport Legends

Since 2018, the event has hosted an onsite sim racing competition in which a select few of the competitors then got the chance to compete in the main event. Some even defeated the real-life drivers, the most prominent example being 2022 F1 Esports champion and reigning eROC winner Lucas Blakeley.

In the first edition on the snow and ice in Sweden, he just missed out on the eROC championship to Jarno Opmeer but still competed in the main event and went up against a little-known driver called Sebastian Vettel. In spite of his immense inexperience behind the wheel of a real car at the time, Blakeley ended up defeating the 4-time F1 champion by 0.08 seconds.

For this year, the organisers had been planning to run Marcel Offermans' The Last Garage simulation that debuted in competition with last month's Sim Formula Europe Super Final. All previous iterations of the eRace of Champions - and also the 2020 Virtual Race of Champions - had been run on Assetto Corsa.

According to the February 2025 update on The Last Garage's website, the hardware requirements had not been met by the organisers which meant they could not have guaranteed a smooth experience. For now, that is all we know about eROC - aside from it taking place once again on Assetto Corsa - but undoubtedly, closer to the event, we will learn about how anyone can enter, as they have previously run open qualifiers.

Any sim racing hopeful could end up planting their name in the same elite club as Enzo Bonito, James Baldwin, Jarno Opmeer and Lucas Blakeley as eRace of Champions champion and end up lining up alongside racing royalty in Sydney next month.

Always wanted to try the content of E-ROC Sweden, but never got my hands on it...:(

Sooo.. this year they will be using Assetto Corsa again. I think this needs to be mentioned in the article.

Well that's not a good sign for Marcel...

I get that he's trying to blow the competition out of the water with an upgraded experience, but the economy is headed under the ground and very few people will be looking to upgrade their PC to run ACE let alone something from one of the main figures in the MSGS saga...

I disagree. I may not know what goes into making a game but surely with something so early in development, only over time will it be refined enough to work on a vast range of hardware.

Oh that's normal game development processes, but Marcel has never cared about the lower end hence the graphical options in rF2 are a case of turn everything down to low or off to have the same effect as other titles on high or ultra...

However it's not like the event wouldn't of been given a clue as to what specs they would of needed, so it's bad mismanagement by the Last Garage...

The main problem is we are heading into a decline economically on a global scale the post COVID boom ends... So any game that needs people to upgrade is highly likely to flop...

Is it just me or is The Last Garage a poor name for a sim racing game?It sounds more like a car repair shop simulator.
I agree it's a poor name for a racing simulation, and that is exactly why it is not the name of the new simulation. It is the name of the company. There is no name yet for the simulation because I'm still mostly working on the core technology and a name would need to align with what ends up being released. So it's still a bit too early for that, but if you have good suggestions for a name, I'm all ears!

If you're thinking of Historics then perhaps have a word with the Duke of Richmond (Lord March) and ask if you could call the sim 'The Goodwood Revival'
After all, the *Goodwood revival is not just a historic attraction known worldwide but it has vehicles that would allow you to utilise so much more of the Engine you're working so hard on, this would include all drive varients, and so many different engine specs, then on top of that you could have the differently dresses fans and the multi class weekend sessions (that I alluded to in an earlier post) and I'm sure that the owners of the cars would love to see their pride and joy being enjoyed by others in a sim.

*Not just Goodwood but many other tracks have Historic weekends, so the track list is kinda open ended!

Marcel if I may, I actually do quite like The Last Garage for a sim title, it is intriguing and vague whilst not being inexplicable

How many work here from that saga, i think there was a very good reason all these guys left. IMHO hoody and MSG were going in another direction they didnt want to go down so left. The last garage is no where near release let alone a EA which you seem to support through many of your posts. The economy is crap but ppl are buying crap EA tells me economy is not as bad as you are saying.

They were going to go away from chasing profits over art, some people prefer profits and sometimes there's various other reasons like personality clashes...

Technically I support all gaming developers because they provide an escape from reality, but that doesn't make them free from critique...

The economy is crap but ppl are buying crap EA tells me economy is not as bad as you are saying.

For now... This is the boom period for businesses and people are struggling with the cost of living despite the massive profits being made...

The past week alone is enough to crash the whole deal... But most of that will be flip flopped because of the loss of profits for the top end, the rest of society will still suffer the flow on effects of market distrust...
