Automobilista 2 may not be the most mod-friendly sim racing title, but IMMERSION Modding Group's XML Selector makes switching between race-specific scenarios a breeze. Here's how to use the XML Selector for AMS2.
For enthusiasts of classic F1 seasons, Automobilista 2 is a bit of a goldmine, to say the least. No less than 17 classes representing Formula One seasons from the 1960s to today are part of the sim, and while they only contain a few of those years' cars instead of full grids, season livery packs make the most of what's there.
Accurate AI driver names and performance, helmets, car liveries, overalls and UI previews add a lot to the experience, namely immersion. Fittingly, @Immersion Modding Group is well known for creating high-quality packs for AMS2's various F1 seasons. As of early 2025, some of them even feature a neat little tool called XML Selector.
This tool allows sim racers to easily switch between different race-specific scenarios - that means driver lineups and car liveries - without having to manually move a bunch of files around. How does it work, though? Luckily, it is super simple to use - here's how you run it.
Once the installation has finished, follow the steps below to use the XML Selector to choose a scenario.
Simple, right? It may not be a full season mod including race-specific car models down to the last detail like in the Grand Prix 4 days, but having the real-life driver lineup changes reflected in the sim, as well as different liveries and AI performance is basically the next best thing considering what's possible in AMS2.
Over the course of that year, 16 teams and 39 drivers competed in F1, although not all of them made it to the grid for a race. With a maximum of 26 grid spots available, teams like Brabham, Fondmetal or the infamous - a word that very much applies to the team - Andrea Moda first had to prevail in pre-qualifying before advancing to the actual quali session. 1992 was the final season to employ this procedure.
As a result, the grids looked plenty different on a race-by-race basis. March, for instance, first axed Paul Belmondo after the Hungarian Grand Prix in favor of Emanuele Naspetti, then Karl Wendlinger was shown the door with two races to go to make room for Jan Lammers as the team was struggling to stay afloat.
Emanuele Naspetti took over from Paul Belmondo at March from the Belgian Grand Prix onwards.
With scenarios for all 16 1992 GPs, the pack offers plenty of choice, although IMMERSION Modding Group notes that it is still a work in progress. Not all races have race-specific liveries, some helmets may not be perfectly accurate, and both the Fondmetal and Venturi teams have not been added yet, which could be rectified in future updates.
Of course, there are more of these F1 season packs that include the XML selector. As of early February 2025, the following sets feature the tool in addition to the 1992 pack:

XML Selector: How To Use It In AMS2
So, you found an F1 season pack by IMG that you want to install and recreate a season in AMS2 with, such as the newly-updated F1 1992 pack - more on that later. Getting it in the game is easy enough: Using the Automobilista 2 Content Manager by @paoloambrosio, simply install the pack like you would any other.Once the installation has finished, follow the steps below to use the XML Selector to choose a scenario.
- Browse to your Automobilista 2 root folder. Normally, this is located wherever you installed Steam, so your path should look similar to this: C://Program Files/Steam/steamapps/common/Automobilista 2
- Locate the XML selector file corresponding to the season pack you just installed. It's a .bat file, in the case of the 1992 F1 pack it is called F1 1992 Selector.bat. Double click the file to open the dialog window.
- Follow the instructions on your screen. Usually, you only need to input a number or a letter and hit enter to advance. The 1992 Selector first makes you choose whether you want a real scenario or one of the fictional ones.
- Once you chose and confirmed a scenario, the XML Selector will take care of everything else. Follow the instructions until everything is finished, hit enter again, and the window will close automatically.Launch Automobilista 2 as you normally would and go racing.
