High-end sim racing gear usually also means high expenses. Simucube looks to alleviate this somewhat - the Finnish brand introduces Simucube Pre-Owned for refurbished hardware.

Sim racing rigs are never truly complete. Even if you think you're all set, there is bound to be another upgrade that will catch your eye, and there always seems to be room for improvement with your peripherals. One of the manufacturers that always comes up in the high-end conversation is Simucube.

The Finnish brand offers wheel bases, wheels and pedals, all geared towards the top end of hardware that is available. Of course, this comes with a premium price tag as well - a single ActivePedal Ultimate, for instance, is €2,378.81 at the time of writing.

To make its hardware a bit more accessible, Simucube now introduces the Simucube Pre-Owned program for used, but refurbished gear in the EU. "Simucube Pre-Owned offers carefully tested and verified Simucube products that deliver full performance with some visible signs on the surface", according to the press release regarding the program's launch.

Simucube Pre-Owned: Two Quality Tiers

The Simucube 2 Sport and Pro wheel bases are part of the program, as are the ActivePedal Pro and Ultimate models, plus the Simucube Throttle and the brand's Steering Wheels. All products are set to come with a 2-year warranty and are categorized in one of two quality tiers: 'Quality 1' means minor visual damage, 'Quality 2' will have more noticeable visual defects.

Regarding the products' function, Simucube promises that they "deliver the same performance as new". Going back to the ActivePedal Ultimate as an example, instead of paying the full €2,3781.81, you can get one for €1,498.65 (Quality 2) or €1,665.17 (Quality 1) - still not exactly cheap in the grand scheme of things, but a significant discount nonetheless.

In addition to the 2-year warranty, all Simucube Pre-Owned products are eligible for full Simucube support and a 14-day return policy.

I thinks it's a very smart move. Knowing Simucube's customer service I would have no problem getting their refurbished gear. Their hardware is made to last for years and years and when checked by their technicians, with a full two year warranty, I don't think anything can go wrong.

This will also effect prices other people ask for their used Simucube gear. When shopping for gear myself, second hand prices were ridiculously high in my country so I ended up buying new for only a couple of hundreds more.

even refurbished simucube hardware is far better any brand

simactive pedal quality 2 at 1120€ already out of stock, no surprise ;), dont care about visual defects, simucube quality is so high that it can work 20 years, it's not logitech ;)

1) Typo on "€2,3781.81".

2) Decent system & deal though - roughly 1/3 off and obviously a great unique selling point. Would be nice to see it expand beyond just EU sometime though - a refurb incentive system is a great access point, but only as literally far as that covers. I'm always one for either getting the most of hardware or passing stuff on for someone else to use so that nothing sits around being wasted, so I support their program.

3) Hope that also deters scalpers and all the idiots on eBay who try to sell (mainly Fanatec) used stuff for full RRP.

I know they're in a different market space / price bracket, but it'd be nice for other manufacturers like Fanatec and / or Moza to follow suit as yeah, it's a ridiculously expensive hobby really.

I think it's a positive step for the sim fans and the planet, even this tiny niche community can make a difference to the disposible economy we have seen grow in the past 50 years, good on them, and I hope many more will join the frey in all markets

@Edwin Spangler, I imagine some of them are warrenty returns, if it's 6 months old and goes wrong then what could they do with it apart from drop it in the trash, now they can refurb and sell it on... good, (again)

I think this is a great idea, even if I still wouldn't shell out £700 for a wheelbase right now  Gives a new lease of life to used gear, will definitely keep it in mind when looking for an upgrade

Yes same here, for a new sim racing hardware company seems like a lot of returns.
It might not all be returns, sometimes there's a minor defect and it just wouldn't do for the quality control, now has somewhere to go, and seconds are often sold off cheap to wholesalers,
In the 60's I remember going to Hertford (UK) market where a fella was selling china dinner and tea sets, they were so cheap nobody could believe it... in his patter he said "Yup genuine bone china" and he tapped one with another and they made that ringing sound, then he just let a plate slip from his fingers to smash on the floor... "whoops, OK my love" he said to a woman you can have that set at half price! other customers asked if he had any more cheap ones, "my guvnor will kill me but here half price to you too, and no busted ones in that one" then told the first woman to count her plates they're all there!... yeah everybody got full sets at half price, it was just a way of selling out missaligned or old stock, or maybe the fell off the back of a lorry... gently ;)

They're not idiots, there is method and strategy at play here - it generally goes something like this:-

Wife delivers ultimatum generally in the form of "Either the damned sim rig goes or I do"

Husband lists sim rig for a ridiculously high price, generally with the qualifier "No lowballers - I know what I got"

Wife is happy because the sim rig is being sold.

Husband can carry on enjoying his toys safe in knowledge that nobody will be stupid enough to pay the asking price.

I have this problem with guitars...and synths....and arcade machines....and motorbikes....and films....and just about anything I buy. Constantly questioning about if I really need it, you've got one of those already....Meanwhile endless clothes purchases and pointless house and garden ornaments.

Yep, I just done a run through all the gear from my various hobbies with the intent to sell some gear to offset some money recently spent.

And all that happened is I rediscovered some gear that is freaking awesome, Then I cleaned it up and put it on display.

So now the wife is confused at to why the collection on display has increased rather then decreased.

She also suggested I sell a motorbike.

Oh how I laughed.

Madness.

RMA (Return Materials Authorization)?
Maybe... I just dont see people returning enough Simucube products to justify an entire program dedicated to reselling it.

Maybe it will be an always 'out of stock' deal and this is just to get some publicity.. There are some pretty interesting competitors to Simucube these days...

Can't work out if your comment was serious or not.

So why in those apparently abundances of circumstances don't the wives stick to their ultimatum and demand equipment sells for less? In that scenario, logic would dictate that the stuff goes regardless.

(On a side note - unless family or another very good reason comes first, if I ever received that choice she'd be packing her bags in no time).

I just see the used pricing situation as people being greedy and exploiting those in need, or when stocks are low, or those (in UK) who may be confused about import fees (that no longer exist for Fanatec gear).

Either way, high used prices benefits me as a seller because if / when I upgrade and pass on my GT DD Pro I can very easily sell at actual reasonable pricing & pretty much immediately, and some lucky buyer will benefit from said reasonable deal. I'll still stick to my opinion though that exploitative (or whatever they are) types are still idiots as they're still greedy and still generally hurting the used market (whatever their dumb reasons are).

The trick here is to make sure all of the toys you buy are black.

Black is like an invisibility cloak to women, they simply don't notice your stuff if it's black. Any other colour and you'll be rumbled straight away. Even if you replace one of your toys, which say is blue in colour, with another which is also blue colour you'll get caught immediately because they can spot the slightest minuscule difference in shade instantly.

But black, it's completely invisible to them. Trust me, I've had 20 years of smuggling experience, I know what I'm talking about.
